13 SW Students Chosen For Clinic
By JOY CHERRY Correspondent The Southwest Miami High Concert Orchestra had 13 "outstanding" students selected for the All-State Orchestra Clinic. "This is the most students Southwest has ever had make the auditions for the All-State Orchestra," commented Phillip Fink, orchestra director. The 1962 Clinic Conference, to be held in Miami on Jan. 4 through 6, promises to set a new high mark in interesting and useful conferences for teachers and higher standards of performance by participating students. Those chosen from the concert orchestra were Linda Rolfes, Larry Brown, Terry Marzolf, Frances Zocco, John Morrison, Tom Williams, Judy Eberley, Peggy Dickinson, Ann Wylie, and Carl Walton. Three selected from the reading orchestra were Jackie Grose, Richard Kittrell and Karen Alderson. The orchestra was honored a second time this month when it received outstanding commendation in the November "Music Director," official publication of the Music Education and Music Teachers Association. The article stated that orchestra, "now only five years old, has the rating of the top orchestra in Florida, and that many of its woodwind, brass, and percussion players are also outstanding musicians of the school band." JOURNALISTS OBSERVE Four journalists from the Lancer attended a press conference at the Dupont Plaza recently. They were Adrianne Schwartz, Ken Golden, Stephen Berlinsky and Sandy Peyser. Wilson Hicks, former executive editor of Life magazine, was the keynote speaker at the Career Day Seminar, sponsored by the Greater Miami Chapter, Theta Sigma Phi. Student journalists from Dade County heard a panel of experts summarize their respective careers. JUNIORS WIN "Slaves" dressed in the red and gray of the cavaliers pulled the SW Junior Class float to first prize at the annual homecoming parade. A Roman theme was further carried out by the officers of the Junior Class who wore togas and stood in a Roman "Chariot." The Sophomore Class won second prize with a football homecoming float. A football field with an eagle's head and pretty girls adorned the float. "Sail along with Southwest" was the theme of the float steered by boys dressed as cheerleaders, and carrying pretty girls throwing balloons, was followed by boys "skiing" on roller skates. "The parade was the longest and most colorful Southwest has ever had," stated Winston Jones, student activities director.
