We've Got Big Stick, So Let's Talk Big--AF Major
We've got the nuclear punch to slap down the Russians, but we must keep this balance of power and not seek refuge in bomb shelters, a U.S. Air Force Major (Reserve) told the Coral Gables Kiwanis Club Tuesday. "We have to show them (the Russians) that we can't lose . . . We have not only the potential, but right now the superiority . . . We have to keep it up," said Maj. Marco Loffredo before 93 Kiwanians at the Coral Gables Country Club. Major Loffredo said we must have the positive approach. We should not panic and unleash a flood of letters to newspapers and take sole refuge in the comfort of bomb shelters. "Not too long ago, we heard the phrase 'Better Red than Dead.' And then you heard our President reply 'Neither Red nor Dead.' The Air Force is of the same policy," said Major Loffredo. "We're not going to start burying ourselves under the ground as though we had nothing to do about it." Major Loffredo said deterrence is our most important asset. He said we have missiles buried under wheat fields, as well as B-58 bombers which can soar skyward to 12 miles' height at 1,300 miles per hour. B-70's which can climb to 18 miles and fly at 2,000 miles per hour are in production, he said. It is vital, Kiwanians were told, that we have this deterrent power - and let the enemy know it - because the United States, historically, does not make the first blow. Major Loffredo is an attorney and assistant public defender for Dade County. He's a graduate of the University of Miami Law School.

Have You Toys, Clothing For Cubans?
The People to People Program may be expanded in this area to include several communities that want to affiliate with Latin American countries, Robert Kingsley, former president, said Friday. Kingsley said he hoped that other area communities will join Coral Gables and Miami in affiliating with Latin American cities. Coral Gables' sister city is Cartagena, Colombia. In other moves by the program, a toy for Cuban refugee children drive was launched in conjunction with WTVJ. New or good toys may be turned over to the television station or to Marvel Cleaners, 16 Miracle Mile, and Kingsley at International Petroleum, 396 Alhambra Circle. Clothing, to be shipped with a school bus to Cartagena, is also being sought by the Program for needy persons there. Contact Mrs. Grayce Wedemeyer, HI 8-7451. The program has raised approximately half the $2,300 cost of the small bus and is seeking aid in raising the balance. Paul Andre is chairman of the group's new membership drive. Any interested person is eligible. Twenty-five groups not already represented on the program have been invited to attend a noon meeting at the Coral Gables Country Club today (Thursday).
