Dr. Thorsten Gustafson, president of the New York Lutheran Conference, will dedicate the new sanctuary and Sunday School unit of the Messiah Lutheran Church, 9850 SW 4th St., Coral Way. Dr. Gustafson will also preach the sermon at the 11 a.m. service. He will be assisted by the Rev. Howard Lindstrom, pastor of the church. The first unit consists of a chapel seating 200; Sunday School rooms, offices and nursery, all air conditioned. * * * John F. Self, a 1961 graduate of Southwest High School, has successfully completed the first quarter of a four year course at the United States Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Port, L.I., N.Y. The son of Mr. and Mrs. John S. Self of 7065 SW 19th St., John received a congressional appointment to the academy from Dante B. Fascell, Coral Gables attorney and member of Congress. Kings Point is the fourth of five federal academies which prepares young men for leadership at sea, graduating them with a bachelor of science degree and a career as a deck officer in the U.S. Merchant Marine. * * * Mrs. C. R. McMakin, 8640 SW 125th St., is reminding flower lovers who want to attend the annual Metropolitan Flower Show, Dec. 8 through 13, that Vizcaya opens at 10 a.m. and closes at 5 p.m. That is the rule of all the Dade County museums. There will be a fashion show tea at 2:30 p.m. the final day for all club members.
