COUNTY LINE with Ed Knight

IN THE MOOD for someone to pity? Then aim your sympathies toward those West Dade residents who must venture by car to and from work in downtown Miami each day. ASK ANY of them and they'll tell you it's rugged, dangerous and nerve-racking. Since the only bus service [f]rom West Dade to Miami is totally inadequate for commuting, the only means of getting to Miami is by car. IT'S HARD enough during most of the year to get in your car and attempt to fight traffic to the big city. But during the next several weeks, it will be practically unbearable. FIRST, THERE are the Christmas shoppers, the ones who can't be satisfied to buy their Yule gifts at their neighborhood shopping centers or in Coral Gables or South Miami. NO, THEY must get in the family car, shop all afternoon in Miami and then start home at the same time as the fellow who drives to and from Miami five days a week. Downtown merchants are already boasting they have a good season coming up. This can be attested to by the daily auto commuter. SECOND, THERE is the tropical Park traffic coming up to thoroughly raise havoc with auto commuters to the big city. The Tropical Park traffic breaks just at the time the commuter is traveling west on Bird Road. And the results are nerve-shattering. AS A RESULT, there's a little game being played over back fences and between chats in Miami's chances of beating Syracuse in the Liberty Bowl. Name of the game is choosing an easier way to get to and from Miami during the rush hours. IT GOES something like this: you mention how bad you think the traffic is. Your neighbor agrees with you. Then you ask him what route he takes. If the other fellow's route seems better than yours, you try his route the next morning. BUT NO matter which route you take, the results are still the same. It's a long, hard and tedious job just getting between two points. There are three main routes, with variations in each one. YOU CAN go east on Bird Road to South Dixie Highway and then northeast on South Dixie to downtown. This is very popular, but highly nerve-racking because of the Tropical Park cars and other heavy traffic. ANOTHER ROUTE is via Coral Way to Coral Gables, through the "City Beautiful" to Coral Way and thence to the city. The third route is the worst. This is by Tamiami Trail to downtown Miami. WHAT THE West Dade Commuter hopes and prays for is an east-west expressway, a high-speed freeway to carry traffic over or through Coral Gables. It is one of the most necessary adjuncts to living in West Dade. It would help West Dade development, cause less traffic on city streets and help the nerves of the West Dade commuters.
