More Safety Honors Come to SW High

By JOY CHERRY Correspondent In the field of safety, Southwest ranks high. Three more awards for safety-conscious students have honored Rachel Gebhardt, Sherri Hirsch and Francis Chommie. Rachel received one of the two $50 savings bonds while the other two girls received $25 bonds for their safety ideas. The contest was a special feature of the "Greater Miami Auto Safety Crusade." VARIED HISTORY A wide range of interests and experience spark four new Southwest faculty members. Jay F. Werner, general math and biology teacher, coaches the gymnastics team. The amateur herpetologist was chosen on the 1959-1960 All-American Gymnastics Team. In 1960 he was the NCAA all-around gymnastics champ. Werner received his BS Degree at Pennsylvania State University where he substituted as a life-saving instructor. Hailing from New York, Mrs. Joan Monte is the newest addition to the Art Department. Mrs. Monte was a commercial artist for seven years. An outdoor enthusiast, she enjoys sculpting, painting, and travel. Mrs. Monte received her Bachelor of Education at the University of Miami and her M.A. at Columbia University. Mrs. Ruth Franz Myers, social studies teacher, can give descriptions of 48 states from first hand knowledge. She also has visited Mexico, Canada, and most recently, Europe. She is also familiar with the Pennsylvania State campus where she earned her AB Degree. A former "Best Actor" award winner has joined the English Department. Howard Wesley Northey received the recognition for two years at Duquesne University, Pittsburgh. The sophomore and senior teacher was also granted the Student Government Award and is a member of the honorary society Alpha Psi Omega. Northey received his M.A. Degree at the University of Miami. STUDENTS AID Nineteen students forego their study halls to assist "Operation Southwest." David Thompson, Wayne Walton, Robert Holland, Sam Harris, and Larry Sinclair aid the office staff by working the public address system, raising and lowering the flag and running stencils for teachers. Cora Daughtery, Charles Youngman and Barron Shields run the switchboard and mimeograph machine. Marcia Gold, secretary to Mrs. Genevieve Glaeser, hopes that the knowledge she gains in the office will help her in her goal to be a legal secretary. Sharon Burr and Nancy Hamasse do various types of secretarial work. The pleasant, courteous voices who answer the switchboard belong to 11 students who have mastered the intricate board of lights and plugs which not only connects the school with outside lines but also connects various school departments with each other. They are Darlene Hughes, Crystal Hill, Anita Barber, Betty Oakley, Nancy George, Sally Lieux, Constance Scrimshaw, Patricia Mullinaux, Linda Keyser-Andre and Gail Friedenn.
