COUNTY LINE with Ed Knight
SOUTH MIAMI'S Jaycees, undoubtedly the most active civic group in the area, was in the spotlight again last week. The Jaycees made their annual selection of South Miami's Man of the Year during a banquet at Homestead Air Force Base. AND FOR the second consecutive year, the Man of the Year was a South Miami minister, this year a Presbyterian. His name is Rev. Neil Wyrick, pastor of Palmetto Presbyterian Church and I don't think the Jaycees could have made a better choice. NEIL WYRICK is not only one of the finest ministers in the area but a jack of most other trades as well. He's a writer, an airplane pilot, an actor, a director (he directs annually the Orange Bowl Easter Sunrise service) and an athlete. REV. WYRICK came to South Miami from Virginia about seven years ago. Although Palmetto Presbyterian Church had been founded, the church has grown steadily through the efforts of Rev. Wyrick and his sermons, his philosophy and his aggressiveness. FOR A PERSON to be named "Man of the Year," he should have the qualities that make him above average not only in his work but as a citizen. He should be unselfish as well as dedicated, aggressive as well as symbolic. We feel Rev. Neil Wyrick has these qualities. LAST YEAR the Jaycees named Rev. Max Morris, pastor of South Miami Baptist Church as Man of the Year. Rev. Morris was named largely because of his efforts against Communism. Both ministers are young. They represent a new breed of South Miamian, a type that is putting forth that extra effort for himself and the community, ultimately making South Miami a better place to live. SOUTH MIAMI Jaycees also are behind a get out the vote campaign to get more South Miamians to the polls Feb. 13 to elect a mayor and three councilmen. Main effort in the Jaycees' campaign is a political rally Saturday, Feb. 10, when all seven candidates for the Council and the three mayoral candidates will have a chance to spout their views and promises. * * * MORE GAS STATIONS - Coral Way west of Ludlam Road is becoming another Gasoline Alley. Bird Road already has acquired this name because of the service stations between 67th and 87th Aves.. Now Coral Way, which certainly isn't lacking in gas stations, is getting three more. One, a Pure station, is finished and ready to be opened at 78th Ave. Two others are under construction at 68th and 69th Avenues, just a block apart. * * * AS ONE MEANS of combatting the growing bicycle accident rate, David Fairchild Elementary School has under-way a comprehensive bicycle safety campaign. Tests have been held to test the pupil's riding ability. In another phase, the childrens' ability to balance and brake properly and their understanding of safety rules and regulations will be tested. Sounds like a good program to me. Why don't other elementaries try it?
