Gables High Notes Cavaliers Ranked First Among County Debaters
By LESLIE GROSS Gables High was host to Hialeah, Miami Edison, Miami Jackson, Miami Beach, and Southwest High Schools in a county-wide debate Oct. 6. The program planning was done by Gables students, Bill Vanderbilt and Steve Mizell. Throughout the course of the tournament, Gables won 35 debates and lost 11, for an overwhelming first place among the county's schools. Area Student Congress will be held Friday and Saturday, Oct. 14 and 15, at Miami Jackson High School. Gables has the largest apportionment of delegates in the county and will be sending 20 representatives and three senators. The election of NFL calendar girls was held last Tuesday. Orders for the calendar are now being taken. Richard Schuster, Gables debater last Thursday at the county-wide debate tournament, became the first of this year's debaters to earn 250 NFL points. This total entitles him to a varsity debate letter and a debate scholarship to Ripon College in Ripon, Wisconsin. Chris announces the following results: Kennedy 55 percent; Nixon 45 percent. Chris, who hopes to expand his poll-taking program to include other questions, hopes to gain a larger sampling by working through the history department. This is not Chis's first attempt at poll-taking. He conducted a similar survey last year during the height of the Caryl Chessmann incident. Gables students overwhelmingly voted to spare Chessman's life. Unfortunately, Chessman passed away before the good news reached him. The Gables Drama Department is now in rehearsal for a production entitled, "The Crucible," to be staged in the near future.
