Barbara Bien Has The Answer What To Do When Tragedy Strikes?

What do I do and where do I go from here is a question hundreds of people must ask themselves, after they have been left handicapped as the result of an automobile accident. This crossroad is encountered every [?]y by hundreds of victims of the nation's spiraling automobile injury toll. [?] One person who found herself at such a crossroad is Barbara Bein. She was just 21 years old and a senior at the University of Miami, when her body was crushed in an automobile accident in 1957. No three years later, Barbara is confined to a wheelchair, paralyzed from the waist down. However, she is not sitting at home brooding over her fate, but is holding down a full time, 40-hour a week job. Finished College Barbara has finished college, and is working in the Coral Gables youth program helping activ youngsters enjoy themselves. She supervises children between the ages of 13 and 17 at the War Memorial Youth Center and thinks she doesn't have any special problem handling her charges, "No more than would ordinarily come up," she said. Along with her other duties at the [?]uth Center, Barbara has been coaching a volley-ball team and is doing everything she can, to see they do well. She feels that the biggst challenge in her life at the moment is to be successful at her job, which she started to work at full time this summer after more than a year's experience working part time at the Youth Cent[?]. Appeared On TV Show Rehabilitation plays an important part in Barbara's life, she recently appeared on nationwide TV show, "Medicine, USA," which originated from Miami Beach during the American Medical Association Convention, and summarized the progress of rehabilitation in the United States. She has the highest praise for the VA Hospital where she took some training to finish up her college program. She thinks the staff and the patients she came in contact with were "wonderful" to her, and seeing so many people "who were wors off than I was" gave her renewed courage [?] go on fighting to overcome the effects of her injury. Barbara liked the work she did at the hospital, "Mostly correcting patients" swimming styles," she said, and her physical education backgonnd proved valuable. Her one regret is that she cannot get out there too much now. L[?]ng with her parents at 1431 Trillo St., Barbara, originally from Chicago, said she "Loves it here." BARBARA BEIN, confined to a wheel chair after she was injured in a car accident, draws from life the satisfaction that she will not surrender to adversity. Facing reality, she occupies her time with various activities at the Coral Gables Youth Center. One of her duties is coaching the girl's softball team. In the background is Susan Dilner, 800 Cremona Ave., swinging at a pitched ball during a recent batting session.
