$3 Million UM Library To Be Built In Spring
The Board of Trustees of the University of Miami has authorized completion of the $3 million Otto G. Richter Library on the main campus, Dr. Jay F. W. Pearson, UM president, has announced. Construction is scheduled to begin i the early spring Dr. Pearson said. The first unit of the library, which cost $485,000, is in use, housing some 200,000 volumes formerly stored on the South Campus. Millionaires Gift Funds to complete the library were provided by utilization of $2 m on of the $6 million bequest from the late Otto G. Richter and through a gift of $500,000 from an anonymous donor. UM students voted last year to add $10 a year to their student activities fee to be divided equally to assist in the construction of a library and expansion of th Student Union. The main portion of the Richter bequest is being added to the University's general endowment to increase faculty salaries. Plans for the complete library call for a structure with five times the capacity of the first unit now in use, or a total of 190,000 square feet. Immediate use will be to house the Univers more than 500,000 books. The first floor will contain the undergraduate reading room. On the second floor will be located the reference, periodical and circulation departments. Additional reading rooms and study area will be found on the third floor. Dr. Archie L. McNeal, UM director of libraries, pointed out that the completed structure will be adequate to take care of the library needs of the University for an estimated 20 years.
