Dr. Cauthen To Lead Baptist Revival Here

The University Baptist Church will be led in revival services this week by Dr. Baker James Cauthen. Dr. Cauthen is leading nine and a half million Southern Baptists in their efforts to evangelize 44 nations of the world. Dr. Cauthen will preach at the 8:30 and 11 a.m., and 7:45 p.m. services Sunday, and at 7:30 o'clock each evening this week. William Cooper, minister of education of the church, will lead the Gospel Song Service. On Friday morning Dr. Cauthen will address the annual meeting of the Miami Baptist Association at the Miami Shores Church. Cauthen is executive secretary of the Foreign Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention. When elected to this position in Oct. 1953, he was the Board's Orient secretary; formerly he was a missionary to China, missions professor at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, Fort Worth, Tex and pastor of rural and city churches. A Texan, Dr. Cauthen was born in Huntsville, grew up in Lufkin, and received the bachelor of arts degree from Stephen F. Austin College, Nacogdoches, the master of arts degree from Baylor University. DR. CAUTHEN Dr. Cauthen is married to the former Eloise Glass, daughter of Southern Baptist missionaries to China. They have two children, Mrs. Bill R. Mathews Jr., and Ralph, a ministerial student. Mrs. Cauthen will address the women of the church in a special meeting on Friday at 10:30 a. m. Dr. T. Rupert Coleman, minister of the church, has extended an invitation to the general public of the community to hear Dr. Cauthen, during these special services.

Burry Named Wesley Aide

Allan Jerome Burry, 6415 SW 82nd St., has been named associate director of the University of Miami's Wesley Foundation for Methodist students. Burry, who received his bachelor of science degree in speech at Northwestern University, is a member of the Community Methodist Church. He was ordained a deacon in June of this year. A counseling job at the Leesburg Summer Youth Camp began Burry's career in church work. He subsequently received the bachelor of divinity at the Union Theological Seminary. A former chairman of the National Methodist Student Commission, he has also been president of the National Student Christian Federation. He has attended executive sessions of the World Student Christian ALAN JEROME BURRY Federation in Germany, France and Greece. Married, Burry is the father of an eight-month-old girl, Diane. His wife is the former Evelyn Moll.

Robinson Westbound For Conference

Coral Gables City Manager L. W. Robinson Jr. is scheduled to attend the International City Managers Association meeting in San Francisco Oct. 12-20. Finance Director Kenneth Alllyn was namd by the City Commission last week to be acting city manager in Robinson's absence.

Baptist Hospital Near Complete But Lacks $'s

The 304 bed Baptist Hospital in South Miami is nearly ready to open its doors for the acceptance of patients, but it is found that the last fund-raising campaign fell about $900,000 short of the $5.5 million goal. Some of this money has been made available through Baptists and Baptist church groups. It is hoped that payment of pledges made in the 1957 campaign will make-up more of the money needed. It is necessary for the five-story hospital to have a working capital of $300,000 cash on hand prior to the opening date. The tentative opening date for the acceptance of patients is Nov. 21. There is a current fund-raising campaign designed to raise $450,000 to $500,000 during October. This amount is absolutely necessary for the proper function of the hospital. The land, surface clearing and landscaping were donated. Funds are available to finish construction and provide portions of the furnishings and equipment. The additional $900,000 is needed immediately for the opening. For those wishing to donate to the campaign, all checks should be made payable to "Baptist Hospital of Miami, Inc." Baptist Motorcade Planed To Deland

Approximately 20 students of the University of Miami are planning to attend the Florida Baptist Convention which will be held Oct. 21-22 at Stetson University, in Deland. Alton Harpe, director of the Baptist Student Union on the UM campus, and Mrs. Harpe will chaperone the group who will make the drive over in private cars.

Myles Bruce Abbott, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Abbott, 511 Almeria Ave., Coral Gables, was Bar Mitzvah on Oct. 8 at Temple Beth David. Myles is a student at the Religious School of Temple Beth David and Ponce de Leon Junior High School.

Rev. Nick Gatanis To Hold Services

The Rev. Nick Gatanis will hold services Sunday at a new Methodist Church, still unnamed on Quail Roost Rd. at SW 127th Ave. Sunday School begins at 9:45 a.m. with worship services opening at 11 a.m. Rev. Gatanis, who was active in starting Westwood Lake Methodist Church, was appointed to head the new church by Dr. P. M. Boyd, district superintendent. Rev. Gatanis, who lives at 5230 SW 98th Ave. Rd., is a linotype operator at THE TIMES.

Jewish Films Scheduled At Israelite Center

The Israelite Center in the Southwest area launches its playhouse this week with a series of four outstanding Jewish films. Season tickets as well as tickets for individual showing, are available by contacting the Israelite Center office at HI 5-1529 or HI 8-9133. The first film, "The Singing Blacksmith," (with English title) will be shown Oct. 16 at 8 p.m. The other pictures can be viewed on Dec. 18, Feb. 26 and April 16. The late, renowned Moishe Oysher stars in "The Singing Blacksmith," a story of a golden-voiced smithy and his gentle love for a beautiful girl in an impoverished Russian town. Proceeds of the playhouse will go to the religious school with more than 150 children at the Israelite Center, 3175 SW 25th St. Formation of the playhouse was announced by Sam Azrikan, chairman of special projects and head of the ways and means committee.

Square Dance Slated Saturday

A Harvest Square Dance will be sponsored by the members of the B'nai B'rith Women of West Miami Saturday from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. A professional caller will be on hand to touch off with the familiar "Swing Your Partner and Promenade." The ladies will serve a roast beef dinner at supper, followed by the dance.
