Gables High Notes Cavelon Wins First Place Award For Year Book
By LESLIE GROSS Mrs. Chris Steers, nationally-recognized Coral Gables High School journalism teacher, yearbook and newspaper sponsor, last week returned from a convention at Colombia University with the results of this year's yearbook judging. Gables High School's Cavelon again received outstanding recognition by being awarded a first place rating. * * * Last Oct. 14 and 15, Jackson High School was host to Dade County high schools for Area Student Congress. Four-hour sessions were held on both Friday and Saturday. The program consisted of two Houses, A and B, and one Senate. Each house session elected a best speaker and a best presiding officer. The Senate session also elected a best speaker. Best speakers from Gables in the House sessions were: Steve Magida, Alan Dinsmore and Elliott Zack. Best speaker of all House sessions was Gables student Elliott Zack. Best speaker in the Senate fell to Richard Schuster. Mike Sadler was elected Best Presiding Officer in the House. Honor Society Members Tapped Last week fifty-three students joined the scholastic elite by becoming members of the Gables chapter of National Honor Society. In a short program over the public address system, Mr. H. N. Rath, Gables principal, commended the initiates and explained the position of today's youth in the future of his country and the world. NHS President Leslie Gross prefaced Mr. Rath's talk and followed the principal's speech with the tapping ceremony. The new members, students who have maintained a 3.4 average throughout high school and who have distinguished themselves by their service records and extra-curricular records, are: John Haeger, Fred Wyman, Gary Routh, Kenneth Allen, Ruth Tschumy, Randolph Feigernhaum, Michele Lebowitz, Nancy Winter, Jerry Pfeiffer, Richard McClung, Bill Haverfield, Laurie Crawley, Steve Magida, Steve Patton, Marilyn Idyll, Norman Gravitz, Timothy Herrell, Donna Finerty, Carese McConnell, Jessie Ann Fox, Jack Brown. Dick Bates, Jack Jones, Sean Kaufman, Ben Porter, Ronald Roke, Mac Russel, Suzanne Frank, Jim Hines, Nicholas Van Vonno, Irene Archambault, Nancy Nimmo, Thomas Deal, Deanna Parks, Patricia Grentner, Carol Michaels, Becky Jones, Frances Malice, Joan Temchin, Lenore Coyle, John Garcia, Ruth Ditzenberger, Donna Hays, Nick Arroryo, Donna Shaw, Dick Ahlfield, Linda Sue Davis, Judy Hasencamp, Richard Caldwell, Hollis Caffee, Riva Goldberg, Ucola Lucke, and Philip Hess. Literary Society A group of Gables High's better English students have formed a club called the Gables High Literary Society. Purposes of the club, whose school recognition is still pending, are to explore the authors and literature of the world and to publish a literary magazine composed solely of students' creative writing. The group is now inducting new members, who must submit an oral report and a sample of their creative writing before becoming members. The Society is sponsored by Miss Pettengill, an English literature major who is currently teaching at Gables High. The actual formation of the club took place over the summer. Each Monday night, between 10 and 15 students gather at the home of one of the members and discuss the area of literature the club is currently engrossed in. Led by President Leslie Gross and first vice president Lee Sandler, the club has grown from an idea to a working organization with over 30 members. The other officers are second vice president, Jeff Platt; recording secretary, Bob Eckert; treasurer, David Richman; parliamentarian, Richard Schuster; corresponding secretaries, Judy Linick and Riva Goldberg; chaplain, Roberta Daum.
Four Freshmen Elected To UM Student Posts
Four area high school graduates are among nine University of Miami students recently chosen to serve in the student government of UM's new University College. All are freshmen. Ann English, 311 SW 55th Ave. Rd., has been elected vice president. Now an English major at UM, Ann was president of her sophomore and junior classes at Miami High, and a member of National Honor Society and a delegate to Girls' State. Toby Gail Grossman, 6221 SW 61st St., will serve as secretary-treasurer. Currently an education major, Toby was treasurer of the Miami High Student Council, president of the Florida B'nai B'rith Girls and winner of the National Honor Society scholarship. Jeffrey Randall, 5950 SW 10th St., will be one of five Student Government representatives from University College. A government major, he is a former president of the National Forensic League and is attending UM on a varsity debate scholarship. Art Rothenberg, 951 Sylvania Blvd., will also serve as a University College representative. He is a former writer and illustrator for the Miami High Times, student newspaper, a member of the varsity tennis team and winner of the Knights of Pythias speech contest. University College is a special unit of the University begun this year to furnish freshmen and sophomores with a firm grounding in the humanities and sciences. The four Miami High grads were elected after a one week campaign to represent the 2500 students currently enrolled in this program.
