Dateline: Southwest High Six Receive Letters For Scholarship Feats

By LAURA HENRY Six Southwest High School seniors will be given letters of commendation for exceptional scores on the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, given last spring. The students are Raleigh Bailey, Elizabeth Hall, Bette Holley, Thomas Smyth, Fletcher Swezey and Richard Williams. "The semifinalists and commended students together constitute less than 3 percent of all high school seniors, and this certainly signifies noteworthy achievement," stated Mr. John M. Stalnaker, president of the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. Mr. John McDonald, mathematics instructor, was initiated into the Florida Bar Association last week in Tallhassee. He attended night school for four years before taking the examination and was one of 300 to pass it at the Dupont Plaza Hotel last August. Red Cross Training Center Donna K. Fouch was one of seven students chosen from all of Dade County to attend the Southwestern Area Junior Red Cross Leadership Training Center. The camp was held at Tuxedo, N. C., Aug. 20 through 30, with 125 selected student leaders from the eight southeastern states attending. The Debate Club, sponsored by Mr. Joseph Shaw, is getting under way. Through this club, a member may work his way toward membership in the National Forensic League. The Scholarship Club, sponsored by Mrs. Barbara Kolosna, is being started at Southwest. This club discusses the different fields in which scholarships are available. The membership is open to all juniors and seniors. Mrs. Patricia Rasmusson, English teacher, was selected "teacher of the day" by radio station WQAM. She received an orchid for this honor last Thursday. A vivacious young man, Jim Cable, has been selected Coaches Choice. Jim, 185 pound tackle, has been playing on the varsity football team since his sophomore year. In tenth grade he had already established himself as a potential star. Jim also plays varsity basketball and baseball. The Future Teachers Club was officially organized at its regular meeting last Thursday afternoon. Harriet Charnin was elected president; Bunny Schwartz, secretary and Judy Lebar, treasurer. The club voted to decorate the front window in recognition of National Education Week, and will honor the teachers of Southwest during this week. They also agreed to offer their services as usherettes at the PTSA meetings. Student Council District Meeting Don Barber, Student Council president, Linda Perry, secretary, Bill Estay and Joyce Killian represented Southwest at the District VI Student Council meeting held at Miami Edison Senior High School. Don Barber and Linda Perry were chosen president and secretary respectively, for District VI. A PTSA spaghetti dinner was held last Thursday evening in the school cafeteria. This was one of their first money raising projects of the year. School Activity Director, Mr. Winston Jones, announced that the student directories are on their way. The 64-page books will contain the students names, addresses, telephone number and section numbers. Highlighting the senior English literature program this year are weekly lectures conducted for the four general class teachers for the benefit of their combined classes. Mr. Joseph Shaw gave a speech on the beginnings of English literature, while Mrs. Margaret Keenan lectured on Beowulf. A reading of Beowulf, tape recorded last year by Sally Hankins, was played. Accompanying it was a costume pantomime enacted by Mrs. Keenan's classes.

Deadline Set For Deals With City Insurance

Coral Gables insurance firms dealing in fire and casualty insurance have until the Nov. 4 deadline to get aboard the gravy train. All licensed firms are eligible to share in the $9561 melon which will be sliced on a point system set up by the city, Finance Director Kenneth Allyn announced this week. The number of points to be alloted each firm will be determined from the affidavit submitted by the firms before the Nov. 4 deadline. Point System "Points will be awarded to qualified agencies with a 1960-61 City of Coral Gables occupational license on a basis of one point for each of the past three years during which such an agency held a Coral Gables license and sold fire and casualty insurance for a full year," Allyn said. The nearly $10,000 windfall results from a kitty made up of 50 percent of the commission paid to the fire and casualty firm awarded the contract to handle the City's insurance. The other 50 percent goes to the low bidder on the City's insurance. Bonuses To Vary Individual bonuses will vary according to the number of participants, the kitty and the total amount of the contract and commission to be paid. "The purpose of this system is to share insurance commission benefits with all agents who sell the type of insurance purchased by the City," Allyn said.
