News Of The PTA Halloween Is Carnival Time

By EUNICE TALL MO 1-2294 "Sources of Tension and Conflict in Adolescence" will be the theme of the Southwest High School Parent Teacher Student Association meeting, Tuesday, 3: [?] p.m., in the auditorium. In keeping with the theme of the meeting, a dramatization entitled "Which Way Out" will be performed by Southwest advanced drama students. The performance, under the direction of Mrs. Lou McLean, drama teacher, is designed to point out some problems that exist between parents and adolescents in the home. A panel discussion will then get underway. Panelists invited to speak are Dr. Murray Heiken, practicing phycologist in Coral Gables; Dr. Mabel Gibby, resident doctor in Veterans Hospital; Mrs. Richard Lephew, dean of women at Southwest High School; and Harriet Charnin, senior at Southwest. A question and answer period will follow the panel discussion. At the business portion of the meeting, three delegates will be selected from the membership to attend the PTA convention in Tampa this month. The teacher delegate will be Mr. John Price, school librarian. Harriet Charnin will give a speech on National Education Week. The theme of her speech will be "Know Your School and Your Students". Refreshments will be made and served by senior home economics students. Sylvania Heights Elementary A parade will begin the Sylvania Heights Elementary School carnival Saturday, 11 a.m., at the West Miami Recreation Center. Children in the parade will be dressed in Halloween costumes. A prize will be awarded to a boy and girl in each grade. Judges for the costume parade are Chuck Zink of TV program Popeye Playhouse; Mrs. Virginia Mae Ruse, president of West Miami Junior High School PTA, and Councilman Harvey Stahl of West Miami. The parade will also have local fire units, a bicycle parade and the West Miami Junior High Band. Following the parade, the carnival will begin at noon on the school grounds, 5901 SW 16th St. Lunch may be purchased. Turkey dinner will be served in the cafeteria from 4:30 to 7 p.m. The menu will include "Turkey in the Straw", rice, beans, cabbage, carrots, salad, apple pie, hot rolls, coffee, tea, or milk. Admission is $1, adults; 50 cents, children. Mrs. Cornelius Hang, 6266 SW 14th St., is carnival chairman. * * * Mrs. John Hall Jones, family counselor, will address members of Sylvania Heights PTA Tuesday, 7:45 p.m., in the cafetorium. The topic for her speech will be "Living with Children". At this meeting the fifth and sixth grades mixed chorus will provide entertainment. Carnival costume winners will be presented to the PTA members at this meeting in full costume. Fairlawn Elementary Halloween carnival, sponsored by the PTA of Fairlawn Elementary School, will open at 11 a.m. Saturday on the school grounds, 444 SW 60th Ave. From 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. you will be socially acceptable if you are stuck-up (with cotton candy), or chilly (from snowballs). You may have your hair raised in the spook house, your eyebrows in the make-up booth. Try your skill at a dozen games, or watch a movie. Browse the country store and visit the bake sale. Pony-cart rides for the young and the young at heart will also be part of the fun. An orange spaghetti dinner, from 5 to 7 p.m., will be followed by black witches and goblins in the costume parade at 7:30 p.m. Coral Terrace Elementary "Haunted Frolics" will be the theme of Coral Terrace Elementary School carnival, Saturday, 2 to 8 p.m. The haunted house this year will be haunted by the fathers of children. The cakewalk, fishing booth and ring the ghost, are among other booths that will add to the carnival fun. Frank Wilcox, WTVJ announcer, will MC the school talent show later that night at 7. Children will participate in this event. Mrs. Frank Howard and Mrs. Bertha Nichols are chairmen. South Miami Elementary "Sibling Relations and Rivalry", a film, courtesy of the Mental Health Society, will be shown to members of the South Miami Elementary School PTA Tuesday, 7:30 p.m., in the cafeteria. John Hall Jones, Ed. D., will lead a discussion following the film.

Ponce PTA Will Offer Harvest Supper

The annual Harvest Supper sponsored by the Parent Teacher Association of Ponce de Leon Junior High School will take place from 5 to 9 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 3, on the school grounds. Barbecued chicken grilled on the grounds will be the featured attraction. The children will enjoy a Harvest Hop with Fred Hohl as master of ceremonies. The school band will present a concert during the evening. There will be cotton candy, sno-cones, bake sale, popcorn, coffee and pop. Also a treasure island surprise booth, plus the added attraction of four mothers who are commercial artists who will do profile drawings. The public is invited and tickets are available at the school, or through Mrs. Lawson A. Cheatham, ways and means chairman.

Picnic Supper On UDC Agenda

A picnic supper Sunday evening will be given for members of Miami-Yulee Chapter, United Daughters of the Confederacy, at the home of Mrs. Alex McIntosh, 2916 Granada Blvd. Mrs. Murray F. Wittichen, 1024 Asturia Ave., president general of the UDC, will attend. Mrs. Clarence Williamson is chapter president.

Daughters Of 1912 Plan Luncheon

Colonel William Carroll Lee Chapter, National Society, United States Daughters of 1812, announce the observance of the chapter's 13th birthday celebration at a luncheon at 12:30 p.m., Saturday at the Riviera Country Club. Mrs. Frances M. Power, president, will welcome members and guests. Mrs. Henry O. Shaw will tell of her trip to Austraila.

Eastern Star To Square Dance

An old fashioned square dance and Halloween costume party will be held Oct. 29, 8:30-12:30 p.m., by South Miami Chapter No. 250, Order of the Eastern Star at the South Miami Lions Club, 7310 SW 62nd Pl. Donation is $1 a person with the proceeds going to charity.

Club Will Get Ready For Yule

Members of the Suburban Garden Club will meet in workshop session at 10 a.m. today at the home of Mrs. L. B. Hicks, 5150 SW 75th St. Mrs. C. J. Drinkuth will be the instructor. The title of lesson is "Ties for Christmas," a lesson in wrappings and bows. Plants for distribution on the Keys will also be shown.

West Miami PTA Plans Follies

The West Miami Junior High School PTA, in conjunction with the faculty and students, will present the West Miami Follies of 1960 on Nov. 9 and 10 at 8 p.m. at West Miami Junior High Auditorium, 7500 Coral Way. Don Terry, head of the drama department, is in charge of the production. Admission will be 50 cents for all. Proceeds will be used for PTA projects during the coming year. Highlights of the Follies will be an original play with both faculty and students in the cast. It is entitled "The Search for Wild Cat Magilaccuddy". Board members of the PTA will present a number under the direction of Mrs. Betty Cutolo. Professional entertainers, Bob Momfort and Gene Bass, known in the entertainment world as the Castaways, will make a guest appearance.

Fall Pow Wow Bazaar Is Coming

South Miami Woman's Club members announce their Fall Pow Wow Bazaar for Saturday, Nov. 5. The affair will take place at the American Legion Hall, 7710 SW 59th Ave. The hours will be from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Mrs. Benjamin Boesch and Mrs. James Culver are chairmen.
