Antiquarian Bookshop Is Filled With Treasures

A BOOK'S COVER can't always reveal the contents of its pages, but it's a different story when it's a work lying on the shelves of Barbara Frederick's antiquarian bookstore. Mrs. Frederick is noting here the skilled craftsmanship of this old German book with its broad, sweeping, gold-colored print on the cover and with a stern-faced Prussian general in the left corner. By LARRY LEDWELL An unusual bookshop, an unusual background, and an overpowering interest in the activities that go on around her are the igredients that make Barbara Bement Frederick's life a full and happy one. The bookshop, Able Books, is located at 9822 NE 2nd Ave. in Miami Shores. Mrs. Frederick's antiquarian bookshop is well stocked with several thousands out-of-print and hard-to-get books. She offers a free world-wide search service for any books that are not on the shelves. Recently, she located a rare book on fishes of the world in a shop in Montreal. She has found other scarce books in London, and Stockholm besides the ones found in this country. Although dealing primarily in old, rare and out-of-print books, she has a large selection of new poety, carries the publications of the Miami Press, and will order any current book from the publisher. She has over 5000 books on the shelves and is planning to put in a children's line. Her interest in books and experience in writing prompted purchase of the antiquarian bookshop. Mrs. Frederick's mother, Mrs. Lewis D. Bement, had a huge collection of books that filled the windows of their home. Many people passing by mistook the display for a public library. Born in New Jersey and raised in Deerfield, Mass., Mrs. Frederick now makes her home in South Miami at 8375 SW 52nd Ave. Her daughter, Robin, 11, attends Everglades School for Girls. Mrs. Frederick is a member of the Zoological Society of Florida, Dade County Vassar Club, Friends of the University of Miami Library, and sings tenor in the choir of St. Thomas Episcopal Church. Mrs. Frederick is one of the few women ever to attend Deerfield Academy, which is an all male school now. She received her AB from Vassar College, and hopes to return for the school's centenary celebration next year. "I love to cook and give parties," she said. She also plays piano and has a dog. The dog, Herkimer, is a stray that wandered into her home and has stayed. She describes the dog as a "thoroughbred mongrel." Mrs. Frederick nearly went into the theatre. She had played a few small parts and was rising as an actress when the depression came. She then became assistant to the publicity manager at Sak's Fifth Avenue. During World War II, she was in Washington, D. C., working on the war bond program. She has been on the editorial and promotional staffs of various national magazines.
