HANDY LITTLE GADGET IS this portable, self contained torch which two teenaged youths used to burn through various materials to enter many area homes. The youths also used black cased flashlights and screwdrivers in their escapades.
Robin Hood Role Is Road To Jail
A series of burglaries in plush Coral Gables, Miami and area homes were cleared up Friday with the apprehension the day before of the "blow torch burglars." Two teen agers, Thomas Merril Roberts, 17, of 7395 SW 34th Rd., and a Southwest section juvenile, have been charged with breaking and entering and grand larceny. A third person arrested by police in the case, Gene Saylors, alias Gene Sailors, a gas station employe, of 3038 SW Eighth St., has been charged with receiving stolen goods, according to Coral Gables police. Face Charges Roberts and Saylors will face charges in Criminal Court, but the 16-year-old has been turned over to juvenile authorities. The youths took police on a tour of Gables homes that would read like 'Who's Who after being apprehended Oct. 20. Among the victims were James Sottile Jr., the banker, and James Norris, former international boxing promoter. Some of the loot stolen by the blow torch burglars remains unrecovered. This includes more than $8000 worth of jewelry stolen from the home of Everett Butler, 236 Edgewater Dr. Acccrding to Gables plainclothesmen Herman F. Pitz and Ted Bishop, who broke the case with Miami police, the alleged fence in the case, Saylors, first told police he would return the stolen jewelry, disappeared from town and was later picked up again without the jewels. Luck, Police Work The apprehension of the youthful burglars resultd from a combination of luck and good police work. Flushed out of a Coconut Grove area near Battersea Rd. by Miami officer Jim Cosey at 3:30 a.m., the two youths were picked up on the Coral Gables side of the city limits in the Sunrise Harbour subdivision by Pitz and Bishop. The juvenile turned out to be wanted on a missing persons bulletin, but police at that point had little on them. However, Pitz and Bishop said they noticed a small, self contained blow torch in the front of the car and this aroused their suspicions. The youths also had black encased flashlights and screwdrivers in their possession. Several breaks in recent weeks had involved a torch device. Screens had been cut and holes punched through glass doors by the resourceful burglars. The teenagers, however, refused to admit the breaks when questioned by Miami police, Pitz and Bishop said. Friday, the youths were transferred to Coral Gables, and, after more interrogation, broke down and admitted the burglaries. Fence Implicated They implicated Saylors as the fence. Saylors, police said, planned a trip to Georgia to dispose of the stolen goods. The youthful burglars, fancying themselves as modern day Robin Hoods, told police they only stole from the rich. Their deering-do exploits included breaking into the Sottile Home, 2525 Indian Mound Trail, while the Sottiles slept. They entered bedrooms, removed pocketbooks and billfolds and took them to the living room to empty them out. But, except for the Butler break, thir efforts were generally ill rewarded. Breaking of the blow torch burglarly case marked two successes in a row for Gables police in its never ending war on burglars. Recently three groups of teenage Negro burglars were broken up.
This Is One Baton Twirler We'd Like To See
Some expert baton twirlers have been known to twirl several batons at the same time, but Coral Gables police are wondering whether the person who stole 204 of them Monday has talents in another direction. The batons, taken from Florida Metal Specialties, Inc. warehouse at 217 Palermo, were valued at more than $1000, according to Coral Gables police.

Signed By Gables Mayor Jewish War Veterans Tag Day Is Proclaimed
Monday, Nov. 7, has been named Jewish War Veterans of th U.S.A. Day in a proclamation issued by Mayor John M. Montgomery of Coral Gables in recognition of the service the Murray Solomon Post and Auxiliary 243, Jewish War Veterans, have rendered to the community. The Post and Auxiliary will hold their annual tag day in Coral Gables on Nov. 7. The revenue from tag day is the main source of income by which the organization continues its work in the field of veterans service, child welfare, and community activities. Members of the Post and Auxiliary devote many volunteer hours at the VA Hospital in Coral Gables, working in the Heart Station, telecart and in escort service. The organization also sponsors ward parties and recreation hall parties for patients at the hospital. In addition they participate with other Auxiliaries in a Halloween Carnival and Christmas and Chanukah festivities at the VA Hospital. The Auxiliary has been aiding a veteran's family with food and clothing for several years. It recently supplied an oxygen tank to a patient leaving the VA Hospital. In the field of child welfare, the chairman, Mrs. Carol Zipper, has just sent two wheelchairs to the state hospital in Orlando for mentally retarded and cerebral palsied children. Diapers, bibs and clothing has also been sent to the hospital. In addition, a local school for the mentally retarded is visited regularly. The Post takes a group of children from the Kendal Home Christmas shopping each year. The Post meets the first and third Tuesday of each month, the Auxiliary the second and fourth Tuesday, at the American Legion Hall, 303 Alhambra Cir.
Metro Asked For Study Of Intersection
Coral Gables is going to ask Metro to study the Granada Blvd.-Anastasia Blvd. intersection to determine if additional traffic controls are needed. One person has been killed and several severely injured in recent months there. The intersection is controlled by stop signs on the Anastasia side. Granada traffic was once required to stop for equally heavily travelled Anastasia which leads to the Veterans Hospital, Biltmore Golf Course, Church of the Little Flower, St. Theresa School and Coral Gables Congregational Church. But Granada links Tamiami Trail to Bird Rd. and is also heavily travelled.
