Jaycees Sign Ralph Flanagan For January 27
Ralph Flanagan and his orchestra has just been signed by the Coral Gables Junior Chamber of Commerce to appear at the Coral Gables Country Club Fri¬ , Jan. 27, for the Coral Gabies Jaycees' Ninth Annual Orchid Dance. Engagement of a "big-name" band for the charity benefit is hoped to attract record attendance to raise funds for the Jaycee clubs' youth welfare projects, such as completion of the new children's park in Coral Gables. I[?]or donations are $2.50 a person, which includes free orchids for the ladies. "We hope that the combination of Ralph Flanagan, and the orchids will give those attending a pleasant evening, and enable us to continue our youth programs which are needed in combatting juvenile delinquency," said club president Richard Fu[?]r.
Canteen Loses Parking Lot Fight
A Coral Gables bar owner's legal fight with the city came to roost recently when the City Commission turned thumbs down on his offer to buy or lease city property for off street parking. The Commission showed little interest in Dale D. Billip's parking problem at the Campus Canteen, located just northeast of the new fire station on South Dixie Hwy. Billips, who lives at 425 Marmore, lost his on street facilities when Metro abolished parking to create a six-lane highway. The 30-year-old pub owner was arrested by Gables police in May 1959 when they raided patrons drinking beer. The case against Billips collapsed a couple of weeks later in Municipal Court, however, when it was discovered that some of the drinking student teenagers had obtained counterfeit draft cards and other papers "proving" they were of legal age. The case led to grand jury indictments against 16 University of Miami students, a former coed and a Miami printer. The students were later suspended by the university. Arrested Again Later, Billips was arrested again, this time on charges that the bar interior was illegally hidden from public view. He was fined $250 and costs by Municipal Court Judge Charles Spooner, but immediately filed an appeal in District Court. That was in December 1959 and the case has not been decided by the courts yet. Billips is also fighting revocation of his license by the state as a result of the convictions.

Tell Court You Want Date
If you want to "fight" a parking ticket, you now have to notify the Metro Court. The procedure used to be for the officer writing a ticket to set [?] court date. Failure to either pay the fine by mailing it in or paying it in person still means issuance of a bench warrant by the Metro Court. The $2 fine for overtime parking and $5 for prohibited or hazardous parking may still be mailed in or paid at 235 NW Third Ave., the former School Administration Building, or at the County Courthouse lobby.
