Eight Words Pave The Way To Adulthood At Sunset Elementary

By RAYMOND LANG Eight words are helping to pave the road to adulthood for pupils at Sunset Elementary School. Those words are "Search for the truth, handle it with love." And though the message is short, it's packed with meaning for it advises a pupil to find the truth on how to gain good character and then to nurture that truth with care. Eight Word Message The principal, Rinalden Saunders, has condensed the "Character Building" program at Sunset into that eight-word message. But action speaks louder than words, and at the school on 5120 SW 72nd St. that action unfolds in two ways, both aimed at building character. Each morning in every classroom, the pupils hear their teacher read a story, often from the Bible. In that story's theme lies a lesson on how to gain good character. Each week, assemblies are held and the programs also point the way toward developing adult-like character. But the morning readings and assemblies are like seeds. For growth, there must be a strong generating power. And there is! In the philosophy underlying the program of "Character-Building." Explains Philosophy Mr. Saunders, Sunset's principal for nine years, explained that philosophy. Its basic premise, he was quick to point out, was that advising pupils how to achieve good character is as important in school as mastering reading and arithmetic. And the basic quality to achieve humility. "And when you have humility, you have self-respect," said Mr. Saunders. "And when you have self-respect, you have respect for others." The principal then proceeded to point out the steps to climb toward good character. " . . . When we get self-respect for others, we go on to self-respect for our parents, then in our schools we have self-respect for our classmates, teachers and others. "And that brings out respect for others, we go on to self-respect for our parents, then in our schools we have self-respect for our classmates, teachers and others. Respect For Community "And that brings out respect for your whole school . . . and the community. "They become citizens of the community and respect it. Then from there," Saunders said, "it goes on to the state and be-comes patriotism. "And from there it infiltrates into a reverence for God." Realizing the responsibility resting upon his teachers and himself, the principal thought deeply, selected his words with care. "And if we don't produce a good citizen from our school then we've failed."
