BUT TENNIS IS HER FIRST LOVE Eileen (Mrs. A. M.) Franklin, chairman of the 1961 Riviera Country Club Women's Golf Association, sent unusual cards this holiday season. They were standard size formal folding cards decorated on the front with a pair of tiny gold putters crossed to hold a tiny golf ball. The card's envelope also enclosed the Association's new year book. Eileen says she has been playing golf for a number of years but her first love is tennis. She and her husband "Red", who both attended the University of Miami before they were married, played tennis. But after "Red" came home from the war, they gave up tennis for golf. However, Eileen still hankers for the feel of that tennis racket in her hand. EILEEN BEVERLY JANE BACK TO THE GRIND Beverly Jane Aylor, freshman at Wesleyan College, Macon, Ga., has returned to college after spending the holidays with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Aylor Jr., 634 Altara Ave. Festivities at home for Bev included the debutante party Mr. and Mrs. Richard DeNyse Maxwell gave at their home, 840 Coral Way, when they presented their daughter, Jerry Lee. Bev's escort to the Deb party was Jim Brewster, a law student at the University of Virginia who flew down from his home in Arlington and was a houseguest of the Aylors. * * * * * Mrs. Celia Utsey Kern of Alhambra Ct. says having the youngest of her three sons home for the holidays was a real treat. That was Frank "Chip" Kern Jr., a junior at Coral Gables High School. What Chip wanted for Christmas and got was a sew clarinet. Sure 'nuff it was under the white Christmas tree among the other packages. Ceil, who is a member of the Coral Gables Garden Club, used her know-how of color combination learned in workshop meetings. Using white paper to wrap her gifts, she utilized last year's greetings cards as decorations. If the card was blue she used matching in color ribbons to tie. Chip is a member of the Band of Distinction at Gables High. His older brothers are Lieutenant Craig S. Kern with the Air Force, and Carroll Kern with Eastern Airlines stationed in New Orleans. * * * * * THE MERCADO'S ARE FROM ENGLAND It is quite a houseparty at the home of Michael Mercado of 4820 SW 103rd Pl., since Michael and his sister, Rose, welcomed their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Mercado, and their 12-year-old son, David, as well as the uncle and aunt of Michael and Rose, Mr. and Mrs. Moe Mercado, who arrived from their home in England for a two months visit. Greeting the English visitors Sunday evening at a party at Michael's home, David charmed all the ladies, including Mrs. Lois B. Vaughn of 6250 SW 21st St., by gallantly kissing their hand as he was presented. Michael will probably sell the merits of life in the United States and Florida in particular to his parents. He has been here 10 years and owns his own beauty salon. His sister, Rose, came over about a year ago. It is a first visit for the Andrew Mercado's. * * * * * MAYBE SHE'S GOT SOMETHING THERE We had a telephone call from an old friend, Mrs. Betsy Dunan, who lives in Coconut Grove, the other day. She said, "I didn't get a Christmas card from you, how come?" And we answered, "Did you send us one?" She replied, "Oh, I never send Christmas cards, but those I receive I answer with a New Year's card of thanks." Well, maybe she's got something there, but we bet if everyone stopped sending cards at Christmas, the endless job of writing cards would soon fade away. Now how about that!

Miss Junia Sells Is Hostess For Open House

Miss Junia Sells, 1410 Alberca Ave., had some interesting out-of-town guests at her annual New Year's Day open house party. They included the Rev. Merrill Dunlap of Oak Park, Ill., and Jimmie Johnson of Fuquay Springs, N. C. Mr. Dunlap, a pianist, organist and publisher of gospel music, played the piano for group singing. Dr. Ralph Harris, organist, played the organ, and Edward Clarke was master of ceremonies. Dr. Harris and Mr. Clarke are both of the faculty of the University of Miami's School of Music. Miss Sells also invited the choir of the First Presbyterian Church of Coral Gables, of which she is organist, so the "rafters rang" with music. Linda and Cathie Clayton were caroling cherubs, and their father, along with Wilfred Smith and Stuart Wilson, were vocalists. Miss Sells and Reverend Dunlap were for many years on the same radio staff in Chicago.
