Gables High Notes / Debaters Sweep Field At Forensic Festival
By LESLIE GROSS Coral Gables High School debaters subdued a host of local and out-of-state teams to win the grand prize in the Miami Beach Forensic Festival Saturday. Gables speakers won the debate sweepstakes and placed in all but one of the eight categories in the competition. Gables High's Ann Stockdale placed in dramatic declamation. Rosalind Friedman was outstanding in girls' extemporaneous speech. Ronald Jacobson placed in boys' extemporaneous. The Gables squad was near the top in junior debate. We were second in girls' debate, placed high in boys' debate and won in the cross-question contest. Gables Forensic members, as well as the rest of the student body, viewed proudly some $250 worth of trophy additions to our front showcase. These represented over 75 per cent of the awards given during the festival. Other outstanding Gables competitors in the Beach Festival were Steve Wayner, Betsy Warren, Rusty Barefield, Martin Goldberg, Alan Dinsmore, Elliott Zack. Gables' first place in the cross-examination was won by the team of Dinsmore and Zack. Thespians Tap Thespians, the drama honor society, recently tapped as new members those students who have earned 10 or more points in the field of drama. President Peter Freitag announced the following new members: Sandra Burt, Mike Cloy, Lin Durmer, Clarese Jones, Tom Maxwell, Denise Most, Susie Nolan, Donna Schuller, Libby Lee, Suzie McCormack, Rick Sammons, Annette Treadway, Hana Handal, Ann Kirk. Brothers Set Pace A pair of brothers are setting the pace in game average for the Gables High Bowling Club. Sophomore Alan Jacobson has compiled a six-game total of 1054 pins for a 175 average, while his brother, senior Ronnie Jacobson, has a 162 average in four games. In team records, the Pin Toppers and the Strikers are tied for the lead in Division I, while the Sliders and the "8" Balls are knotted in Division II. Cavalier hoopers have begun their second season under head coach Robert McCabe. The squad won its first game against Palmetto on Jan. 3. The initial outing was delayed from December because of Coach McCabe's wedding. The Crimson and Gray team highlights four returning lettermen: Bruce Fischer, Larry Blume, Bob Paredes and Ron Henry. Henry, a forward, proved last year to be the team's leading rebounder. He also had the best shooting percentage, scoring 219 points in 17 games during the 1959-60 season. Guard Positions Fischer, Blume Paredes and Jack Fretwell are all battling for the two guard positions. All have shown tremendous ability during practice and are expected to make fine showings during the season. Blume earned his varsity letter last year while only a sopohomore. Ted Waters and Bob Soloman, two junior guard aspirants, have also shown tremendous improvement since their junior varsity play last year. Mark Snyder, only a sophomore, has been promoted to the varsity and has his sights set on the center position. Phil Junger, 6 foot, 3 inch junior, and John Gazitua are also bidding for the starting assignment.
CADET David Michael Pomerance, a Junior at Culver Military Academy, Culver, Ind., wilt participate in the Inauguration Parade with the School Lancer Troop. David is the son of Dr. and Mrs. Joseph B. Pomerance, 12500 Vista Lane, Town and Ranch Estates. He was cited last summer for his work as a Red Cross volunteer at Coral Gables Veterans Hospital.
