Coral Gables High Student She Designs Youth Fair Seal Winner

A Coral Gables High School student's design has been chosen to be used as the official seal of the annual Dade County Youth Fair. Gail Gutten, 3789 SW 29th St., a tenth grader, has been awarded first prize in a county-wide contest to design a new Youth Fair emblem. She will receive her prize during the four-day fair later this month at Youth Fair buildings, 9475 North Kendall Dr. The fair will open at 5 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 26, and continue through Sunday, Jan. 29. Featured will be exhibits, livestock and plants grown and made by Dade County youths. Represented during the fair will be the 4-H, Home Demonstration and Boys clubs, the Boy and Girl Scouts and the Future Farmers of America. The youngsters will be competing for hundreds of prizes and ribbons covering every phase of livestock raising, agriculture and home demonstration work. In addition, contests will be held including a greased pole climb, a greased pig chase and a frog jumping event. An outstanding event will be the daily hatching of baby chicks. Spectators will be allowed in the hatching area. A first in the world of poultry may take place at the fair. A diet of food containing harmless dyes will be given to some of the laying hens. As a result of the dyes, fair officials say hens may lay colored eggs. Another big event is the annual fat steer contest with 15 entries. The steers, the most ever entered at the fair, are being readied now by their young owners. Most of the steers are being raised at the Miami School Farm, 10200 NW 17th Ave. Owners of the steers have been preparing for this contest since the closing of last year's fair. Last year the first prize winner, a black Angus weighing 960 lbs., was sold the same day for $2400. The money won by fair winners go into scholarship funds. Last year's champion steer raiser, Mike Whelan, of Hialeah, is attending a Vermont Agricultural college. The fair, sponsored by the Metro Commission, is non-profit. Students are admitted free. There is a nominal charge for adults. Fun rides and food on the midway are available.
