Exchange Club To Honor Outstanding Students

The South Dade Exchange Club, consisting of area business and professional leaders, has announced plans to honor outstanding students in local schools, beginning in February with South Miami Junior High. Each week a board, consisting of Dr. Kitchins, principal, the Dean of Boys and Girls and two other faculty members, will select a Student of the Week from candidates nominated by each of the 34 homerooms. Basis Of Selection The Student of the Week, who will be chosen on the basis of scholarship, potential leadership, service to school and community, will be the Exchange Club's guest at its regular luncheon where they will have an opportunity to meet these leaders of the community and tell them about his or her hopes and ambitions. End Of Semester At the end of the semester, the 18 Students of The Week will be invited to write an essay on "Civic Duty as a Citizen" An independent group of judges-not members of the club or school personnel - will choose the three best essays from each of the three grades. The writer of the essay judged best in each grade will receive $100 in stock, the next $50 in stock and the third $25, a total of $525 in stock prizes. It was decided to award stock so that the students will have an actual stake in the future of America. The stock will be registered in the student's name, but will be held in trust for them by their parents until they are graduated from high school.
