Onetime Candy Striper heads up operating room
By ANA MARIA ALVAREZ Staff Writer Linda Timmons was one of the original candy stripers at Westchester General Hospital when the volunteer program was first instituted 10 years ago. About a month ago, she returned to the hospital where she started her career, not as a volunteer but as the operating room supervisor. Her duties include coordinating and scheduling the chief of surgery, the anesthesiologist, operating room staff, recovery room staff and supervising operating room procedure. "I was a candy striper when the hospital was still partially a nursing home," Ms. Timmons said. "We were the first group of volunteers to receive pins at the end of the year." Ms. Timmons, who was a volunteer while attending Coral Park Senior High School, is a 1972 graduate of Jackson Memorial Hospital's School of Nursing. After she received her degree in nursing, she became an eye surgery technician at the University of Miami's Bascom Palmer Eye Institute and worked in Jackson's eye surgery operating room. "One of the reasons I came back to Westchester was because I had become so specialized in eye photography for eye surgery that I had been out of the operating room for too long," said Ms. Timmons. "I wanted to get back into the mainstream of nursing." Another reason was that she got married, bought a house in West Dade near Bird Road and wanted to work in the same neighborhood where she grew up. "This hospital is more per-sonal," she said. "I've gotten to go out and see patients before their operations and everyone here seems to care more, not just in the medical sense but in the personal sense as well." One of her plans as operating room supervisor is to institute a more extensive pre-operative patient preparation program - psychological and physiological. "In many hospitals, patients are nothing but bodies being wheeled into an operating room," she said. "But in a smaller hospital like this you can ease a lot of the strain of going into a room with strange lights, and seeing people with impersonal masks in strange surroundings by introducing them to the nurses and technicians before the operation," she added. Ms. Timmons is in the process of transferring from the University of Miami to Florida International University where she plans to continue her studies towards a degree in nursing administration. "Nursing is very progressive, things are changing all the time and you have to keep up," she said. "In a teaching hospital you are constantly seeing new techniques, but in a smaller hospital you have to keep up on your own." Linda Timmons has big plans for operating room
Family moving soon
From Page 1 companied Fire Code Inspector Jerry Bogoroff to the building and Bogoroff had found potential fire code violations that will be pursued. Mrs. Ledee said she moved into the offices after Newman sold her house a year ago and she had no place to live. She said that instead of paying him rent she had worked in the realty office doing typing and answering phones for a small salary to cover her expenses. "I lived in that office be-cause I had been sleeping in a car," Mrs. Ledee stated. "I did not know it (living in the office) was illegal." Newman said he knew it was illegal but assured me it was only until I earned enough money to move," she added. Her stay lasted nearly a year, she said. Newman said Tuesday, May 12 that the people in his building "work here, carry on business here. "I pay rent," he said. "No one can tell me how many hours I can stay. They pay rent. If they want to stay overnight, they are entitled," Newman added. "City Hall was here and they found no violations; there will be no report on anything."
