Columbus grad voted top coach

sports roundup By JOHN WALTERS Sports Writer Back in the mid-sixties, Joe Sanchez was an outstanding athelete at Christopher Columbus High School both in basketball and baseball. Then, an automobile accident marred his chances of ever playing sports again. But the young man's will to go on paid off. He was recently voted coach of the year by the schools in Dallas, Texas. It was a big honor for the 1966 Columbus graduate and it's a big honor for his parents. "We want so much for our Joe to come back to Miami," Rose Sanchez said. "He was such a fine athlete and scholar here and I know that he can be used somewhere in Miami." Joe graduated from the University of Corpus Christi in 1970 with a Bachelor of Arts degree and he then went on to North Texas State to major in education and recreation. Mrs. Sanchez doesn't tire of bragging about her son. "Joe started a soccer team at a high school where he teaches," she said. "The first year the team played they won the championship. "Then," she continued, "he formed a girls' basketball team and they did well also. But Joe wants only to see the kids have a good time and do the best they can." Joe's father occasionally went overboard about his son's athletic abilities. "Joe was a good baseball player," Joe Sanchez Sr., said. "I was kind of his team's number one fan when he was at Columbus. Once, I almost had a heart attack at one of his games. I had to go to the hospital because I got so excited." A top athlete, Joe has made his mark in athletics both as a player and a coach and Dade County athletes would do well to use him as an example of ability and courage. "But, you know," said his mother, "I would just like to have him home again." Sanchez
