Riverside Baptist Church relocating in South Dade
By ELIAZBETH OWEN Staff Writer Riverside Baptist Church, a family church which for years was situated in the heart of Little Havana, is relocating across from the Miami-Dade Community College campus in South Dade. Dr. Emit O. Ray, pastor since 1970, said that after years of trying unsuccessfully to combat declining membership and bridge the cultural gap between Spanish-speaking and English-speaking members of the congregation, the church decided to move. "My intention in coming to Riverside was to bring together the divergent ethnic and linguistic groups in the congregation," said Dr. Ray. "We had this problem in addition to the regular problems that occur in an inner-city congregation." Dr. Ray said that church membership peaked in 1959 at more than 1,000, but that it had dwindled to 400 as the bulk of the congregation moved away from the downtown area. "We had lost practically all the young adults. There were no babies anymore. The remaining members were too old to have children," he said. "If it had not been for the language barrier, we could have overcome everything else. After all, the business of the church is communication." Riverside's history dates back to 1921, when a group of 17 people met Sept. 21. A committee was formed to find a suitable site for a church, and on Oct. 13, Riverside's first organizational meeting was held in the M. L. Carrier home. The church was eventually established at 900 SW 1st St. Dr. Ray said that in 1974, a long-range planning committee was appointed to study what the church could do to meet the problems of a declining membership in an inner city situation. After exhaustive research, the committee recommended and the church voted that the congregation relocate in southwest Dade County. Riverside sold its old grounds to the City of Miami and bought a block of property, bounded by SW 104th Street and 107th Court, the eastern perimeter road of Miami-Dade's South Campus. The new building, which will sit on seven acres, will provide space for worship, educational activities and a kindergarten/day care center. The educational facilities will also serve as a ministry to Miami-Dade students. Groundbreaking for the new Riverside church will be held Sunday, May 16. It will begin with a worship service at 11 a.m. in the community college auditorium, and will be followed by the groundbreaking at 12:30 p.m. at the new site. Dinner will be served afterwards.
