High speed chase results in accident at light

By ELIZABETH OWEN Staff Writer Two Coral Gables police officers, en route as a back-up unit in a criminal chase, ran broadside into another car at the intersection of Douglas Road and Ponce de Leon Boulevard Sunday, May 9, at 4:25 p.m. Officer Richard Allen Fisher, accompanied by Officer Donald N. Wardy, was driving north on Douglas Road at a high rate of speed with blue lights flashing and sirens blaring when he approached the Ponce intersection, police report. As Fisher drove through the red light, he ran into the side of another car, forcing the driver to lose control and slide sideways. Fisher and Wardy were treated at Coral Gables Hospital and released. The driver of the other car, 21-year-old Miguel Cabrera, of northwest Miami, was treated at Mercy Hospital and released. Passengers in Cabrera's car, also treated at Mercy Hospital and released, were: Martha Cabrera, 21, Ofelia Cabrera, 51, and Ernesto Cabrera, 16.
