Tree trimmer electrocuted

A 26-year-old tree trimmer was electrocuted in South Dade Tuesday, May 25, when a branch he was clipping grazed a high-tension telephone wire. Dennis Burkett, who lived at 11332 SW 203rsd Terr., was an employe of Farren's Tree Service, according to officers. He was working in a tree 30 feet up in the air at 11805 SW 84th Ave. when the accident occurred, police said. Two co-workers pulled Burkett from the tree and rushed him to Miami-Dade General Hospital. He died at 3:30 p.m.

Rapist sentenced

A man arrested and charged with the rape and assault 12-year-old South Dade girl March 24 has been sentenced to 420 years in prison. Police said that 29-year-old Jimmy Lee Coney, who had escaped from a work furlough program in North Dade, was sentenced by Judge Ellen Morphoniois to 130 years for rape, 130 years for attempted first degree murder, 130 years for armed robbery and 30 years for breaking and entering. Terms are to be served consecutively. Coney, who received a 20 year jail sentence for rape in 1965, escaped from the work program last March.

Fatal accident A South Dade woman was killed instantly when she was struck by a car at SW 87th Avenue and 118th Street Tuesday May 25. Twenty-nine year-old Shirley A. Sylvester, who lived at 8701 SW 141st St., was walking across SW 87th Avenue when she was run down by a '74 Ford van, police said. Ms. Sylvester was dead on the scene. The driver of the van, 52-year-old Ernest Roberts, of 8785 SW 92nd St., was not charged in the accident. Burger King hit The Burger King at 6800 SW 8th St. was robbed Wednesday, May 26, at 2:35 p.m. Police reported that 14-year-old Emon Mzeghet was working the counter when two men branishiing handguns held her up. After emptying the contents of the cash register into a paper bag, the men walked out. Suicide A 27-year-old South Dade woman, reportedly depressed over personal problems, shot and killed herself with her boyfriend's revolver Tuesday, May 25. Jane Hershman, who lived at 10949 SW 71st Lane, shot herself once in the chest sometime between 8:15 a.m. and 4:20 p.m., police said. Her boyfriend, who was not named, found her body at 4:30 p.m. and called police. Ms. Hershman was said to have been depressed for the past three weeks. Attempted suicide An elderly South Dade man who has reportedly been despondent since his retirement, shot and critically wounded himself Tuesday, afternoon May 25. Nicolas Garcia, 66, who lives with his wife at 7860 SW 32nd St., shot himself once in the head after an apparent argument with his wife, police said. Garcia, who is in critical condition at South Miami Hospital, has reportedly been depressed over domestic and financial problems since his retirement eight months ago.
