Ring's rendition of 'Yankees' is 'damn' good

entertainment Jack Metzger has a really good time in the UM Ring Theater's current production of Damn Yankees. Not that all the players don't seem to be enjoying themselves, but Metzger positively floats, grinning through his devil's rendition of "Those Were the Good Old Days." As Mr. Applegate, the embodiment of Satan, Metzger lures a middle-aged baseball fan-atic, Joe Boyd, into selling his soul to become the star hitter for the Washington Senators. Boyd, after being granted an escape clause, agrees and with a marvelous flash of fire, lightning and thunder, becomes 22-year-old Joe Hardy, "Shoeless Joe from Hannibal, Mo." Joe, played by George Spelvin in his Boyd form, may be a better baseball player as Hardy (played by Jeff Schaeffer) but he is a better singer as Boyd. Spelvin has a rich voice, whereas Schaeffer has only an adequate one - a flaw he makes up for with energetic acting. With the female gender, the reverse is true. Boyd's wife Meg (Barbara Bernoudy is a weak singer at the the beginning of the play. Her second act songs are stronger, but her voice is often lost. Her acting, on the other hand, is moving and properly low key. The female devil's advocate, Lola, who tries to lure Joe Hardy into forgetting his escape clause, is strong in both departments. Kym Minnich, makes Lola a mench. She can sing and act and dance up a storm. Minnich, truth be known, hasn't the world's most voluptuous figure. But, with slinky costuming, sultry dancing and evocative songs, she becomes the most irresistible female young Joe Hardy could possible encounter. Metzger stops the show with his songs, the others simply make it flow. The first act needs tightening and the second needs work on the lighting, but both are probably only opening night problems. And Metzger, who hasn't a weak moment, overcomes both. As the first inning of the Ring's summer season of five American musical comedies, Damn Yankees isexcellent first ball to throw into the park. It is rousing and fun. The number of individual efforts that must mesh together to create an evening of musical theater work well, including the big production numbers. The best of the production numbers features Suzanne Shaw tumbling in jubilation and, in a second example, shows the baseball team on the verge of breaking orders when they "Think About the Game" and behave. The cast and crew are too numerous to name, but it is sufficient to say we give them all a winning score with only a slight delay of game to the lighting crew. The play itself, by George Abbott and Douglass Wallop, with music by Richard Adler, and lyrics by Adler and the late Jerry Ross, is a musical comedy classic and a wise, if ambitious choice for the Ring. Robert Lowery's direction shows some need for further condensation, but the complicated scenes move smoothly and the actual movement and acting were obviously established under a competent hand. Damn Yankees will run at the Ring this weekend and June 2 to 5. Curtain is at 8 p.m. For tickets, call 284-3355. - ERICA MEYER Kym Minnich, Jeff Schaeffer star in UM production
