Tenting tonight? Enjoy campfire but learn rules
Q. How can you take a young child camping, who always seems to be catching poison ivy? A. By teaching him to recognize and identify the poison plants (ivy, sumac and oak) and explaining to him the great itching, swelling and pain they can cause. If you can't identify them yourself, buy a nature book and let the whole family learn together. Teach your child to know them — and leave them alone. Just in case, keep one of the commercial treatments for poison plants in your first aid kit, along with a bar of strong laundry soap for washing is exposed. Q. Is hunting permitted in national parks? A. No. You can hunt animals with a camera, even track the less dangerous ones, but no firearms. Q. A camping friend breaks out a bottle of liquor when it turns chilly. He says it keeps him warm. Does it? A. It makes him feel warmer initially because the alcohol expands blood vessels near the skin, bringing more blood and heat to the surface. But this causes a loss of vital deep body heat, making him colder overall, no matter what he says. Better your friend should eat a candy bar or piece of fruit, which will increase his metabolism, causing his body to generate more heat. Q. Does the automobile mileage disclosure law apply to motor homes? A. The recently enacted law designed to prevent turning back a vehicle's mileage applies to motor homes, truck campers and any other recreational vehicles with odometers. The law requires a written mileage disclosure statement by the seller anytime a vehicle, including an RV, is sold. Q. Is a warped fishing rod still usable? A. For simple fishing, but not for casting. The warped shape of the rod will telegraph weird vibrations to the line, seriously affecting casting accuracy and distance. Q. Should you brake if your RV's tires start to hydroplane (float on road surface water?) A. No. Rolling tires regain traction quicker than locked ones.
