You can't top beach for leisure fun
Take advantage of one of the few forms of recreation that is still free in South Dade — the beach. You can make it an all-day outing or just go for a few hours and enjoy the sun. If you took all the things that would make your visit pleasant, you would probably need a moving van, however. For example, several kinds of suntan lotion, sunglasses, a sun shade, a folding chaise lounge, a big towel to lie on, a little towel to dry with, something cold to drink and something munchy to eat (but not chocolate, it melts). Also a must is something to ready that won't easily blow away (well-worn, fat paperbacks recommended). For your feet bring flip-flops, the only shoes that work well in all that sand. And if you smoke bring a lighter, because matches blow out. It's prudent to bring a couple of dollars because some area beaches sell snacks and rent such amenities as floating air mattresses, beach umbrellas and mini sailboats. Be very careful of the Florida sun. You can get burned long before the red begins to show. If you have very fair skin, select a lotion with a sun screen or sun block in it. You can build up a tan gradually and extend your first afternoon at the beach into many happy days. Word to of caution: This summer, litter enforcement officers will be patrolling the beaches and fining those leaving behind any garbage. Keep the beach clean so your second visit is as pleasant as your first this season. — ANA MARIA ALVAREZ
