Should babies be banned from church?
By ELIZABETH OWEN Staff Writer A woman from Pocatello, Idaho recently wrote to "Dear Abby," asking if babies should be banned from attending church. The incensed lady told of her experience at a church service where a mother and her 18-month-old baby attended. The infant, she said, "did everything but swing from the chandelier, and all her mother did was shush her by putting a finger to her lips." Abby did not give a straight forward answer to the question: she skirted the issue by simply saying that children should be disciplined by their parents. The Times-Guide polled southwest area pastors, priests and rabbis for their opinions on whether babies should be banned from church. Reverend Carsten Ludder, pastor at Christ the King Lutheran Church on Red Road, was adamant: "If you're taking a college course with your infant and other students have paid for the course, the baby won't get anything out of it, the other students will be disturbed and so will you," he said. "The same thing applies in church. Babies should not, in any case, be allowed in church . . . we provide nurseries for that purpose." Reverend Charles Horton, preacher at Flagami Baptist Church on SW 76th Court agreed with the nursery solution. "When one comes to church, he has to consider the group, not himself. It's the responsibility of the church to provide a nursery so infants can be cared for," he said. "The other alternative is a special room with transparent glass where parents with infants can sit and hear the service. We allow babies in our church, but we educate parents about the alternatives." A Catholic priest said parents at his church are most considerate. "If the child cried, most parents will take them out," said Monsignor David Bushey of St. Brendan's Church on SW 32nd Street. "I find parents most cooperative, but then I like to see them come to church with young children. We've never had any. difficulty here." Reverend James Wallace, who is minister at University Christian Chruch on Sunset Drive, told of a recent service where an infant attended. "We had a six-week-old baby in service last week," he said. "I kept hearing gurgling sounds in the back, but no one seemed to be disturbed. "We've found that the persons disturbed most by restless babies are the mother and the grandmother . . . they are much more embarrassed than the people near-by." Reverend Hal Horan of Pinecrest Presbyterian Church on SW 57th Avenue said he prefers an adult congregation. "I want sleeping babies in the sanctuary . . . all others, please go to the nursery," he said. "I'll accept quiet babies, but the worship service is primarily intended for adults." A local rabbi disagrees, however. "My policy has always been not to ban any child, no matter what age," sad said Rabbi Ralph Glixman of B'nai Israel on SW 72nd Street. "No one, no child, is kept out of the synagogue." The pastor at St. Simon's Espiscopal Chruch on SW 34th Street said babies in church can be delightful. "I think parents have an obligation to leave if a child cries, but I like children in church," said Father Joseph Shley. "An occasional cry doesn't hurt a thing. I think it's lovely . . . it reminds us of new life."
