Catch folks unaware for album memories

Childrens' curiosity always lends itself to good photos. Here 4-year-old Michelle Frye of 1214 Mariola Ct., Coral Gables, just couldn't resist putting some creepy-crawlies in a jar and making them her very own pets. Photo by ELIZABETH OWEN Whatever you do, don't say cheese. The car is packed, the picnic basket is ready, the swimming gear is assembled. It's Memorial Day weekend, and the perfect opportunity for the amateur photographer to get some practice. If you can manage to keep the camera out of the sand and the water and the baby's sticky fingers, then you're set. Everyone around you will be relaxing, having a good time. Keep the camera with you, and eventually, the people with you will forget about it. Then start snapping. The worst shots are the "say cheese" photographs. All your friends and family cram before the lens, making stupid faces and holding two fingers behind Grandpa's head. Such photos may be amusing for a minute, but, for the family album or a beginning portfolio, they are no good. The best shots are candid. Natural gestures, habits, body language, and facial expressions are harder than one might think to capture. If the subject notices the camera, he will inevitably freeze up or appear extremely self-conscious. But, ' once you and your camera blend in with the scenery, the field is wide open. Concentrate on snapping at the height of action or emotion: the first lick of an ice cream cone, the initial anxiety when the car keys are lost, the loving embrace of a mother and infant. If you are successful, the day you get your pictures back will be a good one. You will have made a beginning in honestly documenting human nature. — ELIZABETH OWEN
