Your mind is your best weapon against rapist
By ANA MARIA ALVAREZ Staff Writer The greatest weapon a woman can use against a rapist is her mind, said Sgt. Richard F. Dengler, crimeprevention specialist for Dade County Public Safety Department. "Let's face it. The average woman is no match for the average man, physically that is. So the greatest weapon she has against a rapist is her mind, not her physical strength," said Dengler. To help women find out what they can do to protect themselves Dengler will be showing a film entitled, "How to Say No to a Rapist and Survive" at two Southwest area locations during the month of January. The film, suitable for family viewing, will be shown at the Cocoplum Women's Club, 1375 Sunset Dr., on Wednesday, Jan. 12 at 7:30 p.m. The hour-long movie will be followed by a question and answer period conducted by Dengler, Coral Gables Public Information Officer Dennis Koronkiewicz, PSD Det. Jane Syrcle, Det. Kathy McNulty and Capt. Lew Mertz, Coral Gables Police. The program will again be repeated on Thursday, Jan. 27 at Epiphany School, 8235 SW 57th Ave., South Miami, at 7:30 p.m. According to Dengler, the new approach against rape as shown in the film, is a departure from the days when law enforcement agencies were telling women to keep a can of hair spray in their purses, or to use their hat pins if necessary. "Anything you do to hurt your attacker is great, if it works. But if it doesn't, all you will have done is to get him angrier and you could end up beaten or dead." "In this film you can get ideas that if they don't help you, they can't hurt you," said Dengler. "We have had a very good response from the women who have seen it." The crime prevention programs are open to the public and concerned citizens are urged to attend.
City Manager asks for full report on pressure
From Page 1 water problem will be handled by the city," said Johnson. The proposed tennis courts on the Biltmore property will be going up for bids on Feb. 22, according to Gainer. "I thought the situation had been resolved and that is why we moved ahead with the plans for the tennis courts," he said, "It is very discouraging that every time we get to the finish line we find a problem we should have known about much earlier." Gainer said that he will not take any action on the problem until he receives Atwood's report. "I want the fire marshal to give me his honest interpretation of the situation and I don't want him to be intimidated by me or anyone else," Gainer added.
