Former South Miami employe pleads guilty to charges

By EDWIN KNIGHT Staff Writer A former City of South Miami finance department employe has been placed on two years probation in circuit court after pleading guilty to two charges stemming from the disappearance of more than $1,000 in city funds several months ago. Shardina Hill pleaded guilty to grand larceny and official misconduct, according to Assistant State Attorney Ray Badini. Charges were filed against Ms. Hill after an investigation of finance department records showed that cash register tapes and cash receipt records for the period of July 19 through July 30 had been altered and to show amounts lower than the amount turned in by the city's police department of the day's auto inspection station receipts, said Finance Director Charles Stamm. Ms. Hill, the city's cashier at the time, admitted to altering the records, but she denied taking the money until she was in Judge Joseph Durant's court. Since Ms. Hill was bonded, the city has been assured by the bonding company that it will be reimbursed. In addition to the $1,010 taken in July, the city's outside auditors in October found another $500 unaccounted for. This additional shortage prompted City Manager Jack Present to call for an immediate cash audit for the budget year which ended Sept. 30, and an appropriation from the city council for the funds to pay for the special audit. The cash audit, completed in November, showed that there were no additional funds missing above the $1,010 and the $500. Neither has the further investigation been able to connect the two amounts.

S. Miami hires new director

By EDWIN KNIGHT Staff Writer The City of South Miami has found a new recreation director, but has lost a deputy city clerk. The new recreation director is Evelio Vasquez, who will replace the former director, Bert Barrer. From 1973 to 1974, Vasquez was the recreation director in the City of Sweetwater and for varying periods from 1966 to this year has served as assistant athletic director, recreation director and athletic director at Kiwanis Youthland, 9475 N. Kendall Dr. "I believe that we have found in Mr. Vasquez the type of recreation director who will give South Miami a dynamic recreation program for all ages," said City Manager Jack Present in announcing the appointment at the Jan. 4 city council meeting. The loss of the deputy city clerk, Sarah Cadenhead, is due to the phase-out of the city court and the takeover of the city's municipal court cases by the county court. As deputy city clerk, one of Ms. Cadenhead's duties was to act as clerk of the city's Monday night court. As part of the phaseout, the county court system offered anyone in the municipalities, whose job was being affected by the takeover, priority in being hired by the county clerk. Ms. Caden has been hired by the county court.
