movies
“LUMIERE" - Actress' first film, a brooding, casually intense character study of four women, actresses, struggling to find and realize themselves. The subtitled drama has its superb moments (When Moreau unexpectedly tells her lover she's leaving him for an author; the subconscious after-effects from a suicide of a friend; a sex symbol discovering her potential in serious film-making). But Moreau utilizes a style of directing that all too slowly encircles its subject matter with a matter-of-fact indifference. It does achieve the desired emotional involvement and clinical character analysis, though, at the same time, it dissipates the immediacy of the overall impact. Moreau's own performance is down-played, underplayed, quiet while Francine Racette (a striking Raquel Welch lookalike) delivers a beautifully sensitive, touching performance as the sexpot. Rated R, solely for printed expletives in the subtitles, at the Sunset Theater for an additional two weeks. STILL RECOMMENDED "Carrie," the finest American Gothic thriller since "Psycho," is back! For sheer entertainment, nothing more, you still have "King Kong" to kick around, "The Enforcer" for your bullet-proof vest, and "The Seven-Percent Solution" to make the chase merry. Plus "Cousin, Cousine" still on a long run exclusive booking at the Coral Theater. SNEAK PREVIEWS - "Against a Crooked Sky," starring Stewart Peterson, from the company that produced "Where the Red Fern Grows," "Seven Alone," and the weak "Pony Express Rider." Opens Friday at the Dadeland Twin. - NICK SPANOS
