South Dader hunts African game with a camera and lens

By DOROTHY STEIN Staff Writer Big game hunting in Africa is Masud Quraishy's favorite sport, and in 27 years of expeditions he has captured an impressive assortment of wildlife, armed only with a Hasselblad camera and telephoto lens. Quraishy, a native of Nairobi, Kenya, operates the Kenya Photomurals Laboratory in South Dade, and, as the name implies, his other specialty is the photographic enlargement of enlargements that can fill entire walls. Quraishy's own walls are covered by some of his favorite pin-ups - ostriches, cheetahs, gazelles - as well as enlargements he has made for other photographers. (Since his is basically a custom lab, anybody can bring film to him for processing. Several renowned photographers regularly have their processing and printing done by him, and a well-known Australian author who writes for National Geographic sends his processing work to Quraishy from all over the world.) From a standard 35mm negative - about the size of a postage stamp - Quraishy says he can make blowups to about six feet. "People think that 11"x14" is the largest that can be done with that negative, but much greater enlargements are possible, with interesting effects," he says, indicating a wall of giant-sized pictures, some in accurate representations, others so stylized by means of various darkroom techniques that they look more like pen-and-ink drawings than like photographs. He also prints on a special photosensitive linen, and is presently experimenting with exotic foils and colored stock. In order to make the [?huge?] enlargements, Quraishy makes an enlargement of the original negative, called an "internegative," which he then projects onto the wall by means of an eight-by-ten horizontal enlarger, which moves on the floor on tracks. The largest mural he has done - possibly the largest that anyone has done - was 120 feet long, for a Toronto department store; and more recently he completed a photomural curtain, 30 feet wide by eight feet high, for a medical convention sponsored by the University of Miami. Although Quraishy's photomurals decorate public buildings in Africa, Canada, and various American cities, he claims that the technique has been slow to catch on here. Later this month his animal pictures will be exhibited at Security Federal Bank at Suniland, and he hopes ultimately to be able to interest interior designers with the idea of decorating with the murals. Musad Quraishy adjusts the lens on his horizontal enlarger, which moves on tracks mounted to the floor. The image is then projected on the wall. Photo by DOROTHY STEIN
