The Latin woman: She's emerging from her shell

By ANA MARIA ALVAREZ Staff Writer If it has taken sometime for the Latin woman to come out of her shell, it is because for nearly two decades she had been preoccupied with the basics. After the period of adjustment to a new life and a new environment, a great number of Latin women are now turning to the women's movement in an effort to become effective members of this community. "I think the time has come for the Latin woman and her Anglo counterpart to come together and understand each other," said Alicia Casanova, one of the two Latin women appointed to the County Commission on the Status of Women(COSW). "I don't feel we will resolve all of our problems, but by understanding each other we will be able to work together to achieve our common goals," said the South Miami resident. "Whether Latin or Anglo, we have the same basic needs, even though they might be focused differently depending on the culture." Because many Latin women are faced with the traditional and conservative sex stereotypes of their own culture, in addition to the language barrier, they remain an ethnic minority within another minority. In an effort to awaken the Latin women and enlighten her of her rights, opportunities and ways of obtaining them, the Latin Task Force of the Commission on the Status of Women is presenting an all day seminar entitled "The Emerging Latin Woman." The workshop to be held at the Dade County Commission Chambers on Jan. 15, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., will be divided into five areas: economic potential, political awareness, education needs, social service needs and legal rights. A panel of Latin women will question the speakers and make comments. Among the guest speakers at the seminar are Dade County Commissioner Ruth Shack; Marvelle Colby, chairperson of COSW; Nancy Whittenberg, executive director of the Governor's Commission on the Status of Women; Aileen Lotz, director of Dade's Department of Human Resources: Lester Freeman, executive director of the Miami Chamber of Commerce; and Rebecca Carney, director of Continuing Education for Women at Miami Dade Community College. There will be simultaneous translations during the entire program, according to Mrs. Casanova.
