Walker And Thagard Plan Vows

Mr. and Mrs. John B. Walker of 817 Lorca St. announce the engagement of their daughter, Claire, to Donald Rutherford Thagard. He is the son of Mr. nd Mrs. Wendell R. Thagard of 710 Madeira Ave. The wedding is planned for Jan. 22, 1962. The bride-elect was born in Wauchula. When her family moved to Coral Gables, she attended the Gables Elementary School, where in the fifth grade she met Don. Both Don and his fiance graduated from Coral Gables High School in the class of 1959. Don who was born in Coral Gables, recently completed a two-year tour of duty with the United States Navy, serving aboard the aircraft carrier, the USS Essex. Sen. John L. McClellan of Arkansas will be the speaker Friday when the members of the Century Club of Coral Gables hold their first dinner of the club season at the Coral Gables Country Club. Oscar Miller, 2508 Country Club Prado, is chairman. * * * Dick Bates, who was president of his Coral Gables High School class, landed the vice presidency of his freshman class at Davidson College, Davidson, N.C., a Presbyterian mens college. Dick is the son of Mr. and Mrs. H. E. Bates, 7415 SW 52nd Ct. * * * Linda Walter, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. N. J. Walter, 7028 Mindelo Ave., is one of 39 coeds at Florida State University, all of them senior students in the running to be Queen of the FSU Homecoming, Nov. 17-18. Linda is a member of Sigma Alpha Eta, speech and coeducational fraternity. * * * A reception honoring Robert King High, Mayor of Miami, will take place Sunday at the Alianza Interamericana, 1022 Salzedo St. * * * Michael Ross Botwin, son of Mr. and Mrs. Noble Botwin, 116 Sevilla Ave., won a $150 first prize for his kitchen design in competition. * * * A Hungarian Supper is planned by the members of the Little Flower Junior Women's Club 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 18 and will be held in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Murphy, 701 Alcazar Ave. * * * Mrs. Asa B. Groves Jr., 709 N. Greenway Dr., gave an "Irish Coffee" for the members of the alumnae club, Gamma Phi Beta Sorority, of which she is the new president. "It was a good way to get acquainted," Mrs. G. said.

The H. S. Tewells are back at 913 Majorca Ave. after a three months' trip visiting their children around the nation. In Indianapolis, they saw their son, Lt. Richard Tewell. Incidentally, he was a Times correspondent when at Gables High. In Seattle they saw one of their daughters, Mrs. William Aickin, and in Dallas the other daughter, Mrs. James Tea. Grandchildren? "Eleven between the girls," says Mr. T. proudly. * * * We present six additional new members of the Twenty Little Working Girls residing in Coral Gables. They are Genna Latimer, 931 University Dr.; Beth Swanson, 900 Coral Way; Donna Knowles, 1240 Mariola Ct.; Jacque Avant, 434 Perugia Ave.; and Hanna Dyer, 4920 Sunset Dr. Other names were carried last week.
