by helen reynolds society editor Four of the young girls out of 11 who will be presented at the annual Debutante Ball at the Surf Club, Dec. 27 are from Coral Gables. They are Mary Areca Babcock, daughter of Mrs. Guy B. Bailey, 8751 Arvida Lane, Sandy McKay, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John G. McKay Jr., 1300 Blue Rd. Mary Patton, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Stuart Patton, 3211 Riviera Dr., and Katherine Swenson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edward F. Swenson Jr., 21 Casuarina Concourse. Mary Areca, named for her mother, the former Areca Stone Babcock, (and incidentally, Areca is a Florida flower) is a freshman at Bennett College, Greensboro, N.C., attended Everglades School for Girls, and Dana Hall, Wellesley, Mass. Sandy McKay attended Everglades School and was president of the senior class, graduating in June. She is a member of the Junior Assembly and a freshman at the University of Colorado. Mary Patton was graduated from Rosarian Academy, West Palm Beach, and the Academy of the Assumption and is presently a sophomore at Marymount College, Tarrytown, N.Y. Katherine Swenson attended Cushman School and the Everglades School for Girls and is now a student at Smith College, Northampton, Mass. * * * Mrs. Jessie B. Lewis, assistant purchasing agent for the City of Coral Gables and long-time Coral Gables resident, was honored on the occasion of her birthday Wednesday, Nov. 8, with a luncheon at The Pub. She entered City Hall on her job Nov. 1, 1928. There were 22 women, all clerks in the various departments at City Hall there to wish Jessie many more birthdays. They were Thelma Sharpe, Irene Driggers, Kathryn Skogstad, Dorothy Kleug, Kathleen Fuqua. Ina Gilbert, Pearl Watrous, Charlotte Bellomy, Elaine Wenning, Mary Harvey, Georgene Wilkerson, Kay Holcombe. Sylvia Lacune, Betty Able, Joanna Bredlau, Marie Venezia, Jackie Lehay, Betty Knight, Dale Smith. Gene Lamous, Mary Willins and Shirley Jones.
Gableites Swell Opera Benefit
The gardens at the Roney Plaza Hotel on Miami Beach were awash with culture Saturday night as 365 people attended a benefit dinner given by the Young Patronesses of the Opera. Gableites were prominent in the guest list and among the officials handling arrangements. Nearly $1,000 was raised by the organization for its opera scholarship and building fund. There were dancing and cocktails in the garden with a lavish buffet served in the Roney's ballroom. Mrs. Philippe Moore of the Gables was co-chairman of the event. Gableite Mrs. Jack Beckwith was in charge of reservations. Frank G. Poe, 211 Ridgewood Rd., was elected a member of the board of directors of the Coral Gables Country Club at Monday's annual meeting. Reelected were Dr. Dave Bosworth Jr., W. R. (Cookie) Cunningham and James A. Henderson.
