Your Child Could Swap A Year in South America

The American Youth Exchange, a non-profit and non-denominational organization, is trying to set up a reciprocal exchange between students of South America and the United States. It is seeking families who have students between 14 and 19 years of age and are willing to accept a South American student into their homes sometime after Christmas. Next summer the students from this country will go to a South American home. All applicants will be screened scholastically and for good character and sociability. At present there are 40 students from Buenos Aires, Argentina; Santiago, Chile; and Lima, Peru who wish to come here after Christmas and spend three months with an American family. For complete information contact: Mrs. L. W. Bookhultz, MU 1-7513; Mrs. I. Peskoe, CE 8-1651; or Mrs. H. Learner, MO 1-0892.

City Consolidates Lots for Sale as Homesite

The City Commission Tuesday moved to consolidate portions of two lots by purchasing them for $4,333 and then offering them for sale as a homesite. Portions of Lots 27, 28, Block 121, Riviera Section, located at the western end of Savona Avenue where it deadends at Maggiore Street were involved. Abutting property owners had indicated no interest in acquiring the unified tract, a portion of which once had an old house on it.

ART TIMES

By Robert S. Hurwitz The art world gasped, the layman couldn't understand, the artists sneered and the world wondered. Rembrandt's, "Aristotle Contemplating the Bust of Homer" was sold for $2.3 million. There is no question that the price paid is fantastic for any picture and seemingly a tool of power, pride and status. There is no doubt that if Rembrandt were alive he would huddle over a cup of expresso and have a good laugh. There is no doubt about it, money, not necessarily love of art, made the publicized action worth winning. Questionable motives are possibilities and tax deduction purpose is a consideration. Everything questionable considered, the buy of this Rembrandt by capitalist, money-hungry, showoff Americans . . . is THE MOST COURAGEOUS, HEARTWARMING AND WONDERFUL CULTURAL EVENT THAT HAS EVER HAPPENED IN AMERICA. It could only happen in America that the priceless has a price, and that the affairs of heart and art can indeed be bought with money. Too long we have thought little of million dollar movies, million dollar missiles, millionaires, million dollar hotels and Sinatra-Garland getting $40,000 a night. No institution in the world should be more proud and no nation so grateful as to the men of the Met who made this epic decision. I'm not sure how much James Rorimer representing the Metropolitan Museum of Art was prepared to bid but I hope money was no object for getting the Rembrandt. Rorimer's historic comment was poetic, "It would have been heartbreaking, with Wall Street so close, to have lost out on it." Do you detect as I do, that our country in the face of an atomic age has possibly discovered the true meaning of reality and the start of culture? Berets off to the men of the Met.
