Phone Folks Hand Over Biggest Bite

William Gale, district manager for Southern Bell Telephone and Telegraph Co., handed over a $75,978 check to the City of Coral Gables this week representing the firm's 1961-62 real estate and personal property tax. It is the largest payment of its kind to the city. Nearly all the tax was paid on the phone company's personal property, valued at $3,950,860. The 19-mill tax on this was $75,066. The balance of the tax, $4,077 was on Southern Bell's building at Alhambra Circle and Galiano Street. The company's main building on Alhambra is leased. Total valuation of Southern Bell's property in Coral Gables is $4,165,460 and the total gross tax $79,143, but the firm saved four per cent for making early payment - just as you and I could.
