And Una Herself Scraped Off That Paint

By HELEN REYNOLDS Times Society Editor Mr. and Mrs. Asa B. Groves Jr., are the new owners of one of the oldest and most beautiful homes in Coral Gables. It is the two-story, high-ceiling house built 35 years ago at 709 North Greenway Dr. The Mr. and Mrs. Groves are the third owners. The entrance hall, approached from a wide tiled porch can be entered by three doors, about 10 feet apart. And you wonder which one, since there is no indication of a bell anywhere. Pretty Una Groves says they wondered, too, if there could be a front door bell. Finally one was located under about six coats of paint. "I scraped all that paint off myself," said this attractive, slim blonde, dressed in slacks, a shirt and sneakers. She curled herself up in a deep upholstered chair in the cosy living room just off of a large enromous hall. There we chatted. All floors are tiled. The entrance hall — 42 feet by 22 feet — has a big stone fireplace. The floor is black and white foot square rubber tiles. They are the original ones and look none the worse for wear. To the right of the fireplace is the wide-tiled staircase which winds itself up to the second floor where there are five bedrooms. To the left is a wide square arch leading to the dining room beyond. The place also has a large garage, tall as the house, with an apartment on its second floor. Just down for the holidays is Mrs. E. Corley of Evanston, Ill., mother of Mrs. Groves. An alumna of Northwestern University Chicago, Una is president of the local chapter of Gamma Phi Beta Sorority, her college sorority. The first party, a coffee she had in the new house, was an October get-acquainted affair to make plans for the sorority's founders day dinner held at the Miami Shores Country Club. Mr. and Mrs. Groves formerly lived on St. Gaudens Road, Coconut Grove, in a modern, one-story home. When they made the decision to move to the Gables and had bought their future home, Mr. Groves said. "Now we must have the living room air conditioned." They did. "And do you know something?" said petite Una, "it has never been turned on since we moved in, its been that cool here. "And it was so hot and damp in the other house." The Groves have four children, three sons and one daughter. They are David, 16, attending Coral Gables High School; sa III, nicknamed "Tripp," seven, and attending Gulliver School; Regina, called "Reggie," three; and Robert two. GROVES is an attorney by profession. As we stood up to go, the bell rang and Una flew to the door. In a moment she was introducing us to "Madame Marcelle," a pleasant white-haired woman teacher of French who was there for Una's hour of that language.
