Green Light Is Seen

Coral Gables' downtown traffic light system-the "Cadillac with the $9 tires-will be the subject of discussion between City Manager L. W. Robinson Jr. and county officials. That's the $100,000-plus electronic brain located at the bus terminal that depends on a series of radar-counting devices and timers to work properly. The idea is to keep traffic flowing. "I am taking it up with the County to see if they won't give us some assistance," Robinson said Tuesday. His remarks came following the recent recommendation of the Chamber of Commerce, Traffic and Parking Committee's that the city lend the county an estimated $7,555 to make necessary repairs to get the system synchronized again. This followed a meeting between the committee and county traffic officials. "The more we looked the less information we found we had," said Robert McTague of the meeting with the county. But the conclusion was clear: Metro had no plans to fix, said McTague. The recommendation followed to have the city lend the county the money to do the job. Robinson, however, is not so pessimistic. He figures the $100,000-plus system the city turned over is a good talking point. Part of the synchronization problem will be cleared up when the Le Jeune road radar control goes back into operation, he said, and he hopes the county will be able to so something about a troublesome underground connection box which shorts out easily. Robinson said city crews were responsible for the malfunctioning box, installed before Metro took over responsiblity.
