Grand Union Expanding Store Here

Grand Union Supermarket, at 1906 Ponce de Leon Blvd., is undergoing renovation and enlargement, officials of the company said yesterday (Wednesday). Land bordering the store's present limits has been purchased for $142,000. The parking lot is being enlarged to accomodate 110 cars. The present lot holds 40. Part of a program of company-wide expansion, lot construction was begun two weeks ago and building renovation will begin the middle of February. A spokesman for Grand Union Company said that the work should be completed by June 1.

Apartment Is Planned

A new, two - story, $50,000 apartment is planned at Douglas Road and Minorca Street. Owner of the 60-by-60 foot, 11-unit building is builder Fran Klebba. The apartment will have one two-bedroom, two - bath unit and 10 efficiencies.

WITH THEIR HEADS BURIED in a blueprint of the proposed Blue Road bridge are two men who plan to enter their bids on the job. The usual asphalt road now spans the canal; but work has already started on building a bridge across the canal so boats can pass under.

January Building Totals $100,000 Over Last Year

The first month of 1962 got off to a fast start for the building industry in Coral Gables. Nearly $100,000 more than '60 construction was recorded by the Building Department, according to Building Official R. S. Fralick. The total on 190 permits was $600,874 compared to $507,530 for January 1961. Nineteen residences, for a total of $410,000 led building. Two apartments, totaling 12 units, accounted for $600,000 of the total and miscellaneous permits, $75,810. The balance was made up of nine additions, $23,264; a duplex, $22,000; two bulkheads, $4,800; two pools, $4,000 and one alteration, $75,810.

Six Permits Last Week

Only six permits, including two residences, were issued by the Coral Gables Building Department last week. The total was $49,430. Permits went to N. E. Baron, 1427 Alegriano Ave., residence, $20,000. Mr. and Mrs. W. D. Ward, 5721 Riviera Dr., addition, $3,000. Dave Pullman, 4808 Granada Blvd., pool, $3,500. William Charlton, 442 Mendoza Ave., residence, $15,000. Guillermo Mascaro, 1025 Milan Ave., addition and alterations, $1,400. Gables By The Sea, 13001 Lerida St., screen enclosure, $1,530.
