Old Flier Marshall Has New Field to Fly and a Jet Touch for Business
By JOE C. MORRIS Correspondent Bert W. Marshall has lived in Coral Gables by the Sea for five months but he's been so busy he hasn't had time to see the city. His new job as executive vice-president of American Airmotive Inc., takes all his time. From early morning till late at night — seven days a week — he's been reorganizing and expanding the company. The former Air Force colonel has had 17 years aircraft experience — from fighter pilot to chief of operations for a bomber group—but this is his first crack at running a commercial aviation company. His first step was to increase the sales force and start negotiations for new business in the missile field. Then he sent labor teams as far as Georgia and Texas searching for mechanics and technical help. Now he's doubling the existing 900x160 ramp in front of the big overhaul hangar to accommodate the new accounts. "We can handle anything from a single engine airplane to the largest jet aircraft," he said, "and our business is booming. "South Florida resembles the Los Angeles area 20 years ago. The large aircraft corporations of Douglas, Lockheed and North American helped boom L.A. "And the same thing is happening here with RCA-Pratt Whitney and I.B.M. They've already built plants and when Aerojet gets underway other aircraft companies will follow." Marshall came here from California with his wife Jane and their three children Billy 16, Gray 14, and Christina 8. They live at 1601 Lugo Ave. Marshall was quarterback at Vanderbilt in 1937 and received honorable mention for All-America. Now he's trying to tie 1,270 employes into a team that will be the "best aviation outfit in the world." MARSHALL (RIGHT) & AF CUSTOMER
