Gables High Nominates 11 For Silver Knight Awards

By LEE SANDLER Correspondent Eleven outstanding students at Coral Gables Senior High have been singled out to represent the school in the annual Silver Knight contest. A twelfth, for the citizenship category, will be selected later. This contest was created to recognize the sutdents of Dade County for outstanding work in school and the community. There are 12 different categories in which students from all of the county's high school's compete for the county award which is a trophy and $200. Three runner-ups are named in each category. They receive a placque and $50. The candidates from Coral Gables High and their categories are listed below. General Scholarship - Jack Catlin is President of National Honor Society. He has placed as a semi-finalist in the Merit Scholarship competition and was one of the four students from Gables High to be selected to go to Washington in the Westinghouse Science Talent Search competition. English and Literature - Jim Mensch spends a great deal of his time writing poetry and is an active officer in the school's literary society. He is one of the 13 students who placed in the Honors Group in the Westinghouse Science Talent Search. Foreign Languages-Stephen Dubrow intends to major in foreign languages once he enters college. At this point he is studying both French and Spanish. Steve serves as 2nd vice president of the literary society and is an active member of French Club, and Spanish National Honor Society. He is a semi-finalists in the Merit Scholarship competition and won honorable mention in the National Council of Teavhers of English competition. Mathematics-Michael Machtey has shown his superior ability and interest in mathematics by taking advanced calculus courses at the University of Miami in lieu of courses at Coral Gables High. He is among the four students from Gables who won trips to Washington in the Westinghouse competition and is a Merit semi-finalist. Science-Mitch Fruitstone is one of the four Gables students who won Washington trips in the Westinghouse Science Talent Search. He is also a member of the Doctorate Associative Researchers and is vice president of the Chemistry Club. Social Studies-Jeff Tew has shown his interest in social studies by taking an active part in politics in and out of school. Jeff served as president of his sophomore class and is presently president of the Student Government. He was one of the school's representatives to Boys' State last summer and is a finalist in the Civitan essay contest on Communism and Democracy. Arts-Jo Ann Morris has used her artistic ability to decorate the halls of the school with posters. Presently she is president of Pen and Sable, art honorary, and a member of the Student Government Cabinet. She is also a member of National Honory Society. Athletics-Larry Blume won this category by displaying the letters he has earned in football, baseball, and basketball. Last summer he represented the school at Boys' State and is now serving as vice president of the Student Government. Larry is also a member of Letterman's and National Athletic Scholarship Society. Journalism-Lee Sandler is serving as editor of the school newspaper, the High Lights. Lee is serving as President of the Literary Society, president of the Chemistry Club, and vice president of Quill and Scroll, journalism honorary. Music-Rochelle Draizar recently took top honors in music competition in New Orleans by playing the piano. At Gables High she plays flute in the band and is a member of L'Allegro, music honorary. Speech and Drama-Rusty Barefield has been among the top four debators at Coral Gables High during the last two years. He has also proven himself an outstanding student by receiving the history award in his junior year, winning a Letter of Commendation from the Merit Scholarship Society, and gaining membership in National Honor Society.

Spanish National Honor Society at Coral Gables Senior High has announced the tapping of 63 students. Those tapped are Lorie Adler, Alice Airth, Tom Backmeyer, Joan Bennett, David Berenguer, Bernice Berman, Anne Bornstein. Gabriela Botero, Barry Boyer, Carolyn Bramblett, Adienne Brass, Bonnie Braswell, Beth Brawner, Susan Brown, Phyllis Burrows, Valerie Camfield, Sandy Crocher. Vivien Cruz, Ronnie Daniels, Mary Dubois, Nacny Flaxman, Joan Gonzalez, Gloria Gordon, Patsy Hall, Richard Harper, Trip Harrison, Geraldine Kaplan, Norman Kerner, Margaret Krell, Nan Lawrence. Kathy Lewis, Harriet Manning, Susan Melville, Liz Milikin, Connie Pearce, Alan Rauzin, Ann Rayburn, Lynne Rosenberg, Howard Rosenfield, Dorene Ross, Kathie Rowe, Michael-Ann Russell. Laney Schwartz, Linda Sorenson, Rima Sosa, Eleanor Stanley, Mary Trout, Ronni Weksler, Donna Stevenson, Norton Greenfield, Pamela Shaw, Sandra Henning. Carol Besse, Karen Feingold, Karen Reiter, Ruth Scally, Mary Singer, Andrea Westman, Wade Cole, John Morris, Aleda Pintavalle, Dianne Selditch and Wayne Riskin.

OFFICERS ELECTED

Junior Classical League recently elected new officers. Those who will serve are Jane Carol Johnson, president; Lois Weil and Susan Melville, vice presidents; Jackie French and Dottie Gregory, secretaries, Randy Plotts, treasurer; Joan Warren, historian; and Mark Hollins, chaplain.

GUEST SPEAKER

Author Philip Wylie addressed a meeting of the Coral Gables Senior High School Literary Society on the evening of March 21. Mr. Wylie spoke about his works and philosophies.

MATH TEAM CHOSEN

The top math students have been selected to compete in the annual mathematics contest. Their selection was made on the basis of scores received on the national math examination given last month. The three students chosen to compete as a team and their scores are Lee Froth, 113, Michael Machtey, 111.25, and Tony Wasserman, 108.5. Other outstanding scores were Jack Catlin 91.5, Norton Greenfield, 71, Gervasio Prado, 68.75, Brian Krupp, 66, Bob Solomon, 65, Sam Matthews, 64.75, and Jim Fisher, 56. Last year's top score from the school was 83. At that time the score was the highest in the state.

Robert Searle Files For Democratic Post

Mayor Robert L. Searle of Coral Gables filed Tuesday for Democratic state committeeman from Dade County. Searle, the only candidate from Coral Gables, is running with six others for the post.
