Second Suspension Over Frat Pin

(Related story, page 1; editorial on page 4) For the second time within a week, a student of Coral Gables High School has been suspended for wearing fraternity insignia to school. Steve Schultz was readmitted last week after a short suspension. His parents had to co-sign a statement with him saying that he had resigned from the illegal organization. In accordance with the Florida law which makes fraternities not under the supervision of the high school illegal, Harry Rath, principal of Gables High, said that he merely acts as an agent to enforce the law. "We are in the business of teaching," the principal said Tuesday, "but when a student wears a pin right under our noses, he's a lawbreaker. "We don't have a detective system, but when we see a student wearing illegal insignia, we stop him." Suspensions are not punishments, Rath said. He explained that a student wearing a fraternity pin is in the school illegally. The student must sign a statement declaring his resignation from the group with his parents present at the school to co-sign it.
