REACTIONS to ART

by ROBERT S. HURWITZ And here I thought politics, anti - communist movements and right-wing attitudes were reserved for the political pages; certainly not the art columns. Not in a million years did I feel that my words would be used to answer political right-wing charges about art. But LO! (very low) and Behold!, in a column "What Is Behind Modern Art" in the VILLAGE POST paper, Shirley Fitzsimmons cries about Modern Art and its terrible influence on our children, its negation of God, its communist approach, its ugliness, its hoax. This attack upon artists with serious creative intentions and upon people who enjoy this truly American school of art, is willfull, baseless and can't go unanswered. You say: "The imprint of atheism is easily detected in modern art." I say: You are seeing things. If it's so darn easily detected-clue me - I haven't seen an atheist in a painting yet. If you mean that some artists are atheists, then say what you mean. You say: "Modern art is dictatorial in its rules, some of the most prominent being that no object of nature may be painted realistically, and any form of spirituality or prettiness is strictly banned." I say: First, deal in facts. The art form you are describing is not a "modern" art, but instead, the "contemporary" movement of abstract expressionist art. Modern art is a school which includes names you may not have thought of in connection with modern art. Among them are Cezanne, Cassatt, Monet, Segas, Gauguin, Renoir, to name just a few. So get your facts "right" instead of your political leaning. There's no universal law written that states absolute rules. "Spirituality" and "prettiness" are seen, imagined or contemplated in the eyes of the beholder . . . not in the printed word of your column or mine. You say: "Modern Art" appears to be taking over the classrooms of our schools and colleges, much to the dismay of most parents." I say: Most parents hold Charlie's paintings up to be envyed by all. They brag about them, enjoy them and are glad that he or she can participate with all others on the equal basis of free expression. You say: "It is said that the Soviet Union disapproves of "Modern" art for its citizens." You imply strongly that the contemporary movement and its artists are really playing into the plan of the communists. I say: Frankly, you are expressing a view that is so far from what art is all about, and what artists are trying to accomplish, that the comment about the "Reds" will have to be left to the F.B.I. You say: "Hoax;" deliberate turning of the human mind from what is true, good and beautiful to the contemplation and worship of ugliness and dis- tortion." I say: On this score, I truly honor these statements and opinions and respect them. Therefore, I am sure you will respect my opinion that your column was the biggest hoax and distortion I have ever read. Leave art to the artists, and confine your political views to the political pages.

Biltmore Open Okayed

The Biltmore Open Golf Tournament was approved unanimously by the Coral Gables City Commission Tuesday. The $20,000 tourney, jointly sponsored by the City and the Professional Golf Association, will be held Dec. 6-9 at the Biltmore Golf Course. A $3,000 pro-am tourney will preceed the regular tourney starting Dec. 5. The decision to go ahead with the fourth annual tournament came after a conference earlier in the day with Jim Gaquin, tournament manager for PGA. Gaquin and the Commission discussed various methods of promoting the event, but no final decision was reached by the Commission on the form it would take this year.
