Our City Fathers Say Put Crandon to Vote

A resolution calling on the County Commission to place the Crandon Amendments on the May primary ballot was passed unanimously by the Coral Gables City Commission Tuesday. Petitioners need 14,694 signatures to force the County to place the amendments on the ballot and expect to get more than 70,000. But a special election may be forced if County Manager Irving G. McNayr rules he hasn't got time to check out the signatures in time to place the issue on the ballot. Several petitions were being circulated throughout the Gables this week, some by City Commissioners and employes as City Hall became a gathering place for signatures. The Crandon Committee's recommended Metropolitan Charter changes are not as far-reaching as those that have been advocated by the City Commission here.

By Dr. Evans Firemen Told About Heart Rub A life-size doll with the death mask of a Norwegian girl who committed suicide could someday save your life. Last week, Dr. Franklin Evans used one of these dolls in showing Coral Gables firemen how to perform a closed chest heart massage on a heart attack victim. The dolls, on sale in the U.S. to hospitals and emergency-rescue crews, were made by a Norwegian doll-maker whose daughter committed suicide, Dr. Evans said. After munching corn-on-the-cob and eating roast beef and mashed potatoes as the firemen's lunch guest, Dr. Evans stepped into the classroom for his lecture at the station on S. Dixie Highway. Following a 12-minute film on closed chest heart massage, Dr. Evans stressed several points to the firemen: 1. Be sure you know the right way to perform closed chest heart massage. Improper procedure could result in internal injuries and a suit against the city. 2. When you arrive at the side of a heart attack victim, waste no time in beginning manual efforts to get the heart to beat again. Closed chest massage is done by putting your hands, one over the other, on a person's chest over the heart and pressing down and then releasing pressure about once each second. The doll made of rubber serves its purpose as a dummy because of a plastic band around its chest which offers the same resistance as a person's ribcage during closed chest heart massage, Dr. Evans said.

Soccer proved a rough sport for Andrew Kern, 9, of Miami Beach who broke his leg while playing at the Coral Gables Youth Center. Kern was treated at Doctors' Hospital for a fractured lower right leg in a game between Deerborne School, where he is a student, and Riviera Day School.
