City Tries a Method Look, Ma, Trading Stamps from the Boss

Trading stamps for safety ideas - that's the City of Coral Gables' latest gimmick to make employes accident-conscious. Mike Liskiewicz, personnel officer in charge of the campaign, reports enthusiastic response from employes for the plan to give out 60,000 stamps for safety ideas. Already, ideas have been put into effect and their originators paid off in valuable trading stamps exchangeable for gifts. Employes get 50 stamps for a suggestion and 3,000 if accepted. Among the winners are Zoe Ann Helmuth, 1306 Douglas Rd., Apt. 4; and Kay Holcombe, 5224 SW 89th Ave. Miss Helmuth literally "tripped across" her suggestion when she nearly fell in rear of the City Hall parking lot. Her suggestion on how to improve a ramp won her 3,000 stamps. Mrs. Holcombe also won 3,000 stamps for pointing out that bus benches, placed only a couple of feet from the street at Segovia Boulevard and Sevilla Avenue, were dangerous. Mrs. Catherine Skogstad won by pointing out that a broken tile in City Hall was hazardous. But all the suggestions have not been well taken. "Get rid of all the women dispatchers," suggested one crank. "The main purpose of the campaign," said Liskiewicz "is to reduce employe injuries." Liskiewicz pointed out that there has already been a substantial reduction in accidents, injuries and losses in the past three years since the City became accident conscious in a big way. In 1959 the city lost 1,296 days of work, he said. By 1960 this had been cut to 1,103, and last year the number was only 352, a reduction of more than 30 per cent, Liskiewicz said. During the same period, workmen's compensation costs, not including disability leave costs, dropped from $57,291 in 1959 to $29,618 in 1960 and $10,980 in 1961. The trading stamps for safety suggestions is being promoted by three of the leading stamp distributors, Liskiewicz said. For $150, municipalities can buy a lot of safety ideas that may mean savings in time, money and pain, he said.

A portable TV was stolen from Mace Harris Appliances Inc., 243 Alhambra Plaza Saturday while "customers" kept the help busy. According to Gables police, three Negroes entered the appliance store around 1 p.m. and engaged Rubin N. Johnson, the salesman, in a conversation. One of the three slipped away from the group while they were talking. A while later, R. Harry Stumpe, a TV repairman who lives at 5847 SW 91st Ave., came into the store and asked Harris if the TV lying outside next to a car was his. By the time Harris, Stumpe and Johnson dashed out, the set, valued at $190 had vanished. So had the three Negroes.
