Our Chamber Updates Operating Rules

A general revision of the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce bylaws has been okayed by its board of directors. Among major items are: —Elimination of "presidents" of special divisions of the chamber. They are now called "chairmen." —Reduction of the number of ex officio members of the board of directors from about 10 to four. —Giving the Chamber president the right to appoint three directors, a new power. —Requiring any unused funds in such committees as the merchants or Junior Orange Bowl units to be turned back to the Chamber's general fund at the end of the fiscal year in the spring. The new bylaws are, in great part, the work of Henry Havig, a retired Dakotas mercantilist who winters here. He makes a hobby of reorganizing chambers of commerce. His basic guidelines are those laid down by the U.S. Chamber. It was Havig who came up with a statement of policy for the Chamber, also approved by the Board. Its contents are covered in the accompanying story. In reorganizing the Retail Merchants Division into the Retail Merchants Committee, the Chamber board also expanded that group's directorate by 50%, from 20 to 30 members. No decision has been made yet on how to handle the Boosters Club, Stadium Committee and Junior Orange Bowl Committee. All have operated through the Chamber and each has had its own presidents who until now have been ex officio voting members of the Chamber board. In the organization, only the Retail Merchants Committee chairman can sit on the Chamber board.

A Policy Statement Sketches the Details

Why have a Chamber of Commerce? This is the question the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce asked itself at a recent board meeting when a statement of policy was adopted. The main answer they found: Provide for unified representative action on matters of common interest. But other important reasons listed were to promote the general business and cultural welfare of Coral Gables, its trade area and the State of Florida. Represent the business and professional interest of the city on matters of general interest in all relationships with other communities or with government or political subdivisions and departments. Advertise the community and its assets in all practical ways in order to increase our general business. Engage in all reasonable efforts to draw new business interests and industries to our city where such business will contribute to the general welfare. Assist in cementing the inter-relation of various interests within our area for the promotion of harmony and unity of action. Engage in all activities of common interest usual to Chambers of Commerce. While affirming all this, the Chamber reserved the right to reject projects of other organizations it is a member of. Other highlights: A committee cannot commit the Chamber to a certain course of action unless authorized. General information about the Chamber to come from the Chamber manager. No function to furnish information regarding the character, moral or financial standing of individuals or firms. No free memberships. No partisan politics. Chamber manager to clear all press releases. Sixteen categories of membership are set up: Amusement and entertainment; auto dealers, service, parts, implements and aircraft; construction; finance; hotel, motels and apartments; insurance and real estate; manufacturers and processors; professional. Public utilities; publishers, printers and radio; restaurants, cafes, bars; retail, wholesalers and distributors; services; transportation; and diversified.
